Annapolis - May 19/20 weekend - 968 FunDay!
#1

Hi Guys! Time to firm up plans. Looks like May 19/20 won, with Saturday May 19 as most preferred.

Good news -- I checked with the city, and we can park together at city dock for $25 per car "for a few hours" (not all day, and earlier in the day the better, like starting around 9:00-10:00ish). I would need to file an application well in advance to get approval and reserve the spots. Or we could meet at the Naval Academy stadium, or another free location just outside of town -- high school, nearby Quiet Waters Park, or a restaurant like Mike's Crab House on South River. (group parking in town is hard to find)

There are no other city events that weekend, but it is the start of Commissioning (graduation) week at the Naval Academy. Parents/families may be coming in that weekend, so if you wanted to stay over Saturday night, get a hotel or B&B reserved NOW. If you've never been to Annapolis, it's a quaint historic town right on the water, lots of boats and scenic areas, lots of great in-town walking things to do. Perfect for a weekend getaway.

We could meet at city dock in the morning, mingle amongst ourselves and our admiring public , have lunch at one of the great places around the dock area, then do a fun run across the bridge and on the eastern shore with lunch in St Michaels or Chestertown, OR drive through south county, along the bay and through scenic horse farms to some little beach towns. Then we can head back to Annapolis for dinner -- crabs (& other seafood) at Cantlers or some other spot.

Please post a reply including:

1) Want to join the fun?

2) Would you prefer Saturday (5/19) or Sunday (5/20) for the fun run?

3) Would you want to stay over Saturday night? (I can provide accommodation suggestions, and could plan a group breakfast)

4) Willing to pay the $25 parking fee, or prefer a free other location?

5) Input on: agenda, driving route & destination preferences, dinner location

Please post asap so we can apply for the parking at city dock if that's the group choice. I'll be racing sailboats in the Caribbean March 21 to April 2 (I know, rough life), so would appreciate a volunteer or two to assist and possibly submit application while I'm gone.

Will be great fun, good weather, fun roads and locations, and terrific food!

Thanks,

Kathy

Hi Kathy,

Thanks for deciding to pull this together !

1) Definately have it in my calendar to join the fun (2 for lunch, Jay and Melva)

2) Prefer Saturday since we will be in DC on Friday

3) Only about 2 -3 Hours from home, we' won't need hotel

4) Willing to pay $25 (Especially for a great Photo Op), but a K-mart parking lot where we won't get dinged is just as good.

5) Agenda: Wash and shine, Photos, Drive 50 miles or 1 1/2 Hours (Smooth, curvy roads, low police presence ) as many Boats or beautiful scenery as possible. Cantler's or Crab Claw for lunch.

I sent you contact info in PM, will help in any way I can, remotely...

Regards,

Jay

Kathy, I'm in for the 19th. Not staying overnight. $25 parking fee is okay by me. I can volunteer. Let me know what I can do. I live in Reston. Not overly familiar with the Annapolis area but I have had some excursions in the Eastern Shore.

You forgot to mention the blue angels flight show that’s held at graduation. There’s a great spot for viewing that right above carols creek restaurant.

I'll be there, no need for overnight (I live in Bowie).

I'm in! 19th is fine. Jay's agenda sounds good although parking around city dock may exclude the wash and shine part. The $25 fee is OK as it would be a neat thing to do, but can go along with the parking lot idea just as well. The biggest advantage to city dock would be public exposure to show off our cars...but then again, I suppose that may have the potential to backfire...don't have a specific idea of how, just playing devil's advocate. At any rate, Kathy, let me know if you need anything. I'm only 40 min away. I vote for the drive through south county for horse farms and beach towns. Let's meet, drive, eat, and drink! What else is there?

Kathy,

Sounds like fun but I will have to see how worn out I am after the 968 Celebration in Hershey. Based on having done them before, I will need some recuperation. Looks like you have a good group already signed up for your 968 FunDay!

Good news, kids....confirming that we'll have a play day in Annapolis on Saturday, May 19. Who's in?

Need to get a good headcount for planning. Popular vote was for no overnights, just a fun day here. I have a driving route mapped out, taking us from Annapolis to St. Michaels for lunch, with rural bay view roads and a ferry ride to Oxford, followed by a possible stop in Easton and then back to Annapolis for dinner. Crabs in St. Michaels or Annapolis, or both.

Since parking's a premium in Annapolis , we have two choices about a meeting place: the first is $free and easy, doesn't require too much planning and we can take dropins...we can meet at or near the Navy stadium just off Rt. 50 then drive proudly through town on our way to lunch in St. Michaels. We could do a quick stop together at an open area at city dock (but can't park) near the water for photos.

The other requires planning and exact headcount in advance and $25 each. I need to double check with the city about reserving parking places at city dock and file the necessary papers for approval. If we do this option, the city will reserve spaces for us for a few hours, the earlier in the day the better. This also requires a commitment up front of $25 each. This option would allow for a longer visit in Annapolis and lunch here, then a drive over to St. Michaels and back.

I'm fine with either option. The first option might make things easier; the second would be fun and provide more visibility for us in town. Both St. Michaels and Annapolis provide a great backdrop for photo op's.

Please post a new note if you're planning to come play with us!

See y'all soon!

KAthy, I'm in. $25 is not a problem, whatever the majority goes for. Sounds like a great run. Haven't been to Annapolis is a while. Are you up for a caravan to Hershey?

Glad you're in, Cosimo...thanks! And thanks for the caravan invite....I'm pretty far east of your planned 270 caravan, so I'll just meet up with you in Hershey on Friday.

Update: OK, I went for the high FUN FACTOR and best way to show off our cars! I made application yesterday to the City of Annapolis for the parking at City Dock, and based on the call I got today, I think we'll be approved. I did some creative writing on the permit. I told them we're the "Porsche 968 Owners" having an educational event for the general public about our rare and collectible cars and we have selected Annapolis for this event. I said we estimate 10 cars to participate. I also indicated that I'd send a notice to the Capital Gazette newspaper and also to the Porsche Club of America (which I'll do), which could bring additional visitors (and spending money) to Annapolis.

Fee: We need to pay in advance for the $25 reserved spots at city dock (I said we'd need them from 9:00am til 1:30 pm), so I'll pay it upfront and you can send me a check. Once the permit is approved, I'll post a note and send you PM's with my address.

Agenda: On Saturday, May 19, we'll meet between 9 and 10am (should give everyone enough time to get here from PA, VA, DE, DC, WVA, NJ, MD) at city dock. On the permit, I wrote that owners would show our cars to the public as an educational event, then we will be having our owners luncheon at a nearby restaurant. Afterward, we'll drive in a procession up Main Street and on some scenic roads to Rt. 50. Then, we'll take the Bay Bridge over to the eastern shore, drive some back roads to St. Michaels, take a ferry over to Oxford, drive back on small roads to Easton then Rt 50 back to Annapolis. Depending on timing and everyone's schedule, we can have dinner in St. Michaels or back in Annapolis.

Signs: Since we're making it an educational event , I was thinking it might be nice to have some signs or at least laminated sheets that describe our cars. We could stick them on our windshields or put bigger signs on easels. I'll make up a large sign that says "Porsche 968" and include information about the 968, will put on an easel or in front of a car. Anyone have any samples or suggestions for the individual pages that you can easily create for your cars?

Meals: I'm working on a location for lunch and options for dinner in St. Michaels and Annapolis, will keep you posted. I'll make reservations for lunch and dinner, and each person will just pay their portion of the bill after the meal.

So, for parking permits and meals, I need to get a firm headcount ASAP. Thanks!

NOW I'm getting excited about this, since it really will be a fun way to get together in a great place and show off our beautiful kids! See ya soon!

Here's who I have on our "attending" list, and number for lunch:

94SilverCab - 2 for lunch

Cosimo - # ?

Rhudeboy - # ?

Darryl - # ?

944/84 - # ? (city dock and lunch only, not available for fun drive)

happysails2you (me) - 1 (maybe 2) for lunch

Previously, JWahlsten indicated interest....I'll PM him to see if he's still interested. That would make 7 cars so far. Huskydog, are you in? (since you live here!! hope you don't have other plans)

Anyone else? Would be nice to get at least 10 cars, maybe even 12-15?

Also, this is NOT AT ALL affiliated with PCA, and there is no intention of inviting other PCA folks on our 968 drive on the eastern shore...but I thought it would be fun to show off our babies to other Porsche owners who might be interested in seeing us at city dock....ideas or PM's on this welcome.

Of course Sandi and I are in for the City Dock gathering and possible lunch if its in Annapolis. We have to be in Columbia Sat evening so we most likely will not make the drive to St Michaels.

Kathy, to enhance the "educational" aspect of your event, make certain that you look at the sign that Don will be showing at Hershey, which has a variety of 968 statistics. It stands on an easel - and, I'm guessing that an appropriate incentive could result in your being able to borrow the sign for the Annapolis event. Understand, though, that it may be that Don simply doesn't lend the sign at all, in which case you could have a poster made up that would provide similar information. I have a camera that could take a photo that likely would be suitable for a Kinkos-produced poster.

Great suggestion, Anchorman! I'll bring my digital camera to Hershey, will take photo so I can "liberate" anything that would enhance our Annapolis gathering. But I like your high-res/Kinko's solution. Or Don, perhaps a few drinks will shake that sign loose from your grip....I'll buy!

GREAT NEWS! Just got the approval from City Hall that we can have our 'educational event' at City Dock on May 19! We will have reserved parking spaces right at the dock area, great location! We need to get the parking money in by May 11 (one week before), so PM me to confirm you're coming (and how many for lunch) and I'll send you my address to send your $25 parking fee. So far, I have confirmed 94SilverCab, Cosimo, Rhudeboy, Darryl, 944/84, Huskydog, and me.

There are lots more 968's in PA, NJ, DE, VA, DC, and MD, so come join us for a great time!

After our 'show' we'll have lunch then take off around 1:30 for our Fun Run to St. Michaels (on the eastern shore) and back. Dinner in St. Mike's, Easton, or back in Annapolis.

If you have Porsche friends who'd also like to join us at City Dock or on the fun run, that would be great! Just PM their info to me.

This FunDay is not affiliated with any organization or club, just some car owners who enjoy driving and showing off their babies. Participation is at each driver's own risk. (official disclaimer)

Do you think it would be a good idea to post this event on Rennlist to attract a wider group of 968 owners?
