Amplifier location
#1

I have a 1992 968 Cabriolet that came with the following options regards the stereo system:
 • 331 – AM/FM Cassette w/2 Door Speakers

 • 490 – Sound Package

 • 494 – Amplifier System

What would the correct AM/FM Cassette unit have been from the factory (a Blaupunkt 'Acapulco' head unit and remote CD unit are installed in the car presently)?

Can anyone shed some light on what comprised the 'Sound Package' option?

Also, where would the amplifier have been located in the car by the factory?

I opened up the driver's side door to get at the window tracks to lubricate them, and when I removed the lower door cover with the speaker grill, I found a void where a tweeter would've been, a coaxial speaker where the woofer(?) should've been, and some kind of circuit board with all sorts of components on it, glued to the door panel proper. It certainly doesn't look to be a factory installation, and as fussy as I am about my cars, I'd like to get this sorted out and back to some semblance of a factory installation (not saying that's going to give me the best audio performance in the world).

Any thoughts, insights, ideas would be most appreciated.

the options varied over the years. you would need to look at the wiring diagram for your year to see what was in it. i am almost done with the year by year listing, but not quite. i found another variant a couple of weeks ago, and need to add that in. it was in a 92 no less. that makes 2 completely different upgraded systems for the cab, both of which are different than the upgraded ones for the hardtop model.

you could have had 3 speakers in the door, or 2.

the midrange could have been in the lower area, or up front midway down the panel.

you could have had no amp at all, one amp under the passenger seat carpet, or one under each seat.

you could have had 4 x 6 rear speakers, or you could have had boxed separates.

Spider, I have the same car and options but modified by the PO at the dealership. Not a very professional job, a hack job really, but an alpine head unit hooked to a JL amp and sub with other two channels driving the door speakers. Stock harness was mutilated but it looks like all the speaker leads from the amp are looped behind the head unit slot.

stock wise, I have an amp under each seat(disconnected), 4x6ish things in the rear panels(disconnected), haven't removed the door panels but I assume w/m/t separates being replaced with an aftermarket something but the tweeter is still wired. So an eight speaker system if you don't count the rear 4x6's co-ax units as two speakers (then technically it would be 10)

I have amassed a pile of vintage blaupunkt items with more coming. I think I went a little odd but my plan is; a Houston sqr06 head passing through a sub-100 to a bqa-80 eq. I have two SC-xn-a electronic crossovers for some quad-amplification front and rear. I will use both stock amps plus a bqa-80, bqa-160, both quads and a bpa230 stereo amp..... A dude is sending me a CDC-m1 cd changer from Germany and I picked up a 10 dollar Casablanca head unit to control it (the Houston has the input but not the control) to go under the parcel shelf. the old changer is fiber optic and the interface has an input just in case I have to hook up some chickies iPhone. my plan is to put four 5.5 or 6 inch speakers will fit behind the storage doors and to use the access plug for the top in the rear panel as another tweeter mount. Everything else should hide.

most of it is way older than the car and it might end up sounding like a clock radio but I don't care. Stefan said it would be a challenge)) great guy to talk to for your music needs @SWStereo
