My OEM Motronic fuel and ignition timing computer has failed. I have never touched it or changed the chip. Now I need a new engine computer.



Are there recommended alternatives to the OEM Motronic? I have a new supercharger kit from Design 1 Racing on the shelf. I plan to install the kit this winter. The kit comes with a chip that fits the Motronic.



Does anyone have recommendations about other types of fuel and ignition computers that can be fitted easily to the 968, with rather easy tuning, and that will fit the supercharger?

nothing has "easy" tuning. there are over 140 maps in the motronic. that's a LOT of tuning. it's a lot more than just idle, part throttle and wot. there are maps for a lot of in between conditions. they did a lot of work to create something that worked. unless you are prepared to spend a ton of time, i'd avoid it.



of course if this is a race car, then you can get away with a lot of the tuning designed for civility.



i have no idea how the kit will run with other tuning that what i provide. running something else voids the warranty on the kit, as i can't predict what the temps and such will be like, or any other complications due to the introduction of new variables.



that being said, you can get a DME for about $500.

Thanks Flash! That's probably what I thought. There is no easy solution other than a similar Motronic unit.



A new OEM costs about $1400 at Pelican Parts. + shipping, custom handling and tax to Norway. Will be minimum $2150 before it reaches my hands. I've not yet checked the price at the local Porsche dealer.

I've looked for used units. I've found one at DC Automotive, but I have not ordered it, because I'm not sure about the part number there and I've not been able to contact them.



The item text at DC Automotive is: "Control unit - dme -, 94461812301 .... Item Number: 94461812302"

So - is it a 944.618.123.01 or a 944.618.123.02? I need the 02-type. To fit the current wiring and the supercharger chip from Design 1 Racing.

Anyone in the forum who have a Motronic control unit type 944.618.123.02 for sale? Domestic US shipping is possible. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I have one from my '94 but you will have to supply the chip. 944.618.123.02 TYP 968 MW-02, Bosch PN 0 261 203 070. It was in working order when it was removed.

I used ECU Doctor for mine when it went out. $400 and well worth it. A year later I thought I had a problem with it and sent back to them, they checked it out (no charge) and sent back to me. And these guys have a great warranty.
