Airbag control module

Hey all,

 

I'm looking for an airbag control module for my '92. I replaced it once before - a mechanic triggered it again by turning the key when the battery was disconnected. A Durametric won't do the reset so we're figuring it's toast for some reason. There's a diagnostic in the manual that I haven't run yet but in the meantime thought I'd query the forum and see what might be out there - if anyone's removed theirs for racing reasons...

Why toast? Perhaps still a fault in the circuit? What codes does it gives? Or when you can not enter it you have to use another adress to access it.

uk4u - Yeah there might be a fault somewhere besides the module - I should look into a proper diagnostic. At the moment just lining up ingredients for a fix. The Durametric was used by an acquaintance when I wasn't there and I'm not familiar with the Durametric's operation. We've been looking for a Hammer to borrow but without success.

Does anyone know if an accident where the airbags are deployed harms the airbag computer module? I had my car at Rennsport this week and they could not reset the light. They claimed that the computer was not talking to their Bosch hammer. I had the same experience when I was using a Durametric on it. That leads me to think that the control module is bad. I found one from a car that has been in an accident. Would you expect the control module to still be functional after an airbag was deployed?

That seems a bit unlikely for the ECU to just die after an airbag deployment


It seems like a big waste of electronics, the big question is who would no for sure now?

The early systems - meaning the 968s - are one-and-done. After deployment, control unit, both sensors, steering wheel contacts, and airbag must be replaced.

Well, if the one I lined up is dead, and mine appears to be incapacitated, does anyone out there have one sitting around , or perhaps a line on someplace that will rebuild my controller unit?

I would hazzard a guess that the thing has a big arrow on it for the accelerometer, this could need to be reset after a heavy impact, as the wording kind of gives something away

the other thing to consider is that these units are very sensitive to voltage, if your battery drops below about 12-12.3v the light may well come on

Martin,

 

I spoke to Randy at DC Auto and he said that they are, in fact, a one and done unit. Apparently the connections fry and fuse when the airbags are deployed.

 

Of course, all mine experienced was the rattling of bad roads at the West Coast Gathering last summer. Why this would cause such a problem is beyond me, but it did so now I have to deal with it. Getting a Camry is looking better and better these days...

if it was cracked roads and bumps then i would think its repairable,

 

I would not take the word of a man at a breakers that wants to sell you bits,

 

give RS Barn a call he might have a few floating about from race cars

Matt, I have a Camry. Very reliable but I always fall asleep driving it, or even looking at it.


I'll bet on a solder joint coming loose, my fillings did on that road.

the durametric can reset the airbag code, as long as the fault is cured.  it is in a different area in the software than the other stuff.  you have to have the right version of the software installed though to use it.  i think it was 6.0

Thanks Flash, but the problem is I have no idea what the fault is. The Rennsport techs couldn't even get the Durametric to speak to the airbag module to read the code. I would hate to just start randomly replacing parts, but it seems that I may have to do exactly that and just hope I eventually replace the right part.

Well, I replaced the airbag module with one that was known to work. Same result. Now I am thinking either one of the impact sensors or the clockspring is the culprit.

those impact sensors are a bugger.  the connections are very fickle.  i had to clean them and then reset the airbag with the durametric, but i finally got it to go away.

Since this started after the teeth-rattling road we did my money is on a loosened connector. I'd work on the connector before the sensor.

I sprayed the connections on the crash sensors and the control unit with Deoxit. That stuff is hard to find, but it turns out Guitar Center keeps a supply of all three types.

 

Still going into fault after about ten seconds. I am going to check the clockspring next.

That's actually a very good point which never crossed my mind - no idea how 968s react to battery voltages which drop but on more " modern " cars there are numerous issues which cause havoc with all sorts of warning lights being triggered, or forcing the car into limp / safety driving mode, and other crazy stuff like that which seems to have no relationship to a battery , but it does !

Having had to he voltage regulator fail a few weeks ago whilst 16 miles from home, I can tell you it shuts down like a human in dire straights


The first thing I noticed was the volt meter suddenly dropped to about 12.5 from its normal, then the big red ! came on, after that it was one thing after another

The speedo failed, the mileage stopped recording, fuel gauge dropped to 0, oil pressure stopped working then finally the engine died
