A Trip to the Barn
#21

1) Fly into Philly Intl, take the subway/train system to Warminster and I'll pick you up at the Warminster train station (1.5 miles from my office). Then we'll go to Pete's....

OR

2) Move on over!!!! Real Estate and interest rates are incredibly favorable!

I sure he could clear things up for you. Perhaps he'll chime in on this thread. With a title like a trip to the Barn I'm sure he'll give this topic a glance.
Oh and Pete. I think I left my ipod touch under the seat. Please keep it safe.<!--QuoteEnd--><!--QuoteEEnd-->

I think I'll give Pete time to read/respond to the thread before I panic.

I don't remember selling anyone a stock chip???
To clarify things. In a stock car the A/F is lean to begin with at lower rpm and rich at upper rpm. They did this on purpose.
The airbox mod with K&N makes more power with stock chip due to a/f getting closer to ideal in peak torque AND RPM
RANGE but it is quite lean until 3800 rpm or so.
Car will run better from low to high rpm with all three mods

after speaking with pete, it seems that the way we did the tests may be responsible for the lack of significant lean readings - we tested at the tailpipe, which is slower to respond - it makes complete sense that once you remove the restriction of the intake system that you would get more air in, and thereby lean out the mixture - the sensor in the tailpipe was apparently too slow to pick up the low end changes though

this also explains part of why the rs barn chip outperforms the rest, especially when used with the airbox mod

Hmmm...you know it migh be worth it for me to fly out, get the full exhaust system +short shift kit + firewall brace + strut brace....drink in the atmosphere of tunned 968s and the Barn and fly back with lots and lots of stuff. In the Netherlands you pay more tax when importing using the web than when you fly in with the stuff. The difference in tax could almost cover a return ticket.

But how do I sell this to my wife??

I looked through this thread from the beginning, and couldn't find exactly what you were having done to your car at RS Barn. So, please let us know. Then again, maybe I don't want to know, as it's sure to make me insanely jealous .

Nothing like that. I was told by my previous P-mechanic that I needed my engine mounts replaced so I made an appointment with Pete. I had a feeling there were other things wrong so I wanted an experts opinion on what my car needed. After his once over it turned out that my mounts were fine. He measured and check them and couldn't figure what the other guys were talking about. My clutch on the other hand wasnt fine. Which my previous mechanic should have picked up on. I think the problem is that they generally work on 911s so the correct feel of a 968 escapes them. at least thats what I'm trying to believe as it helps me sleep better.

So Pete installed the proper clutch, sealed a few leaks, replaced the HCV, some pads, the hal sender, hoses etc. He even fixed my roof which I had all the parts to do in my garage . I sent him my chip as he wanted to install it and test it out before the car back to me. He even added the trim rings to my airbox. He was really set on making it right! I cant wait to go back when my money is right to get the exhaust. If only I had an extra grand..

Sounds great - another first-rate experience with RS Barn. Seems to me that if every American company or business gave people the type of experience that RS Barn consistently does, we'd be on top of the world.

Pete and Max at RS Barn saved my bacon on a trip back from east coast. Excellent shop and my highest rating. It's hard to believe Max can wrench like that at 22 years old.

Just got home from my first visit to RS Barn and had to say to all whom want the best service you will ever have, at the most honest shop you will ever spend your hard earned dollars at, from the nicest, learned, least pretentious, down to earth guys who have wielded a wrench...IF YOU OWN A 968 GET TO RS BARN!
It's nice to know there is at least one place in this crazy world where things are what you'd hope they'd be.
Thank you Max,
Thank you Pete,

A loyal customer for life,
Dave

Seems odd to me that adding more air through a MAF would cause a lean condition, unless somehow you'd maxed out the MAF or run off the top of the fuel map in doing so. A little more air due to reduced restriction should be well within the MAF and software. Given how much more air mass the system would see on a cold, dry day at sea level should me accounted for the maps and MAF measuring capacity should manage a few speed holes in the airbox during normal operation.

'course I am an airbox mod skeptic but that's not material here, and as I now have the supercharger I might never again care about an airbox on a 968.
I was almost hoping the airbox that was in the trunk of my new car was modded so I could test them back-to-back in my black car. As it happens it is stock and pristine.

we did test it - extensively - read the article - it works - the theory is similar to the proven results of any cold air intake - the factory airbox is very restricted - relieve that restriction and behold! more power

other gains are from a less restrictive better flowing filter, and a colder intake pickup point (the OEM one sucks)

all of this can be math proven too

all totaled it is nearly 11 hp

obviously not nearly that of a supercharger though, but it definitely shows how critical flow and location are, which crosses over to forced induction applications too
