A cheap mod

Over the weekend, I swapped out my stock halegon head light bulbs with Sylvania's Silver Star High performance halegons ($34/pair). I also swapped out my stock halegon fog lamps with Sylvania's Cool Blue halegons ($32/pair). These bulbs definitely lay down a lot more light with less glare. This gives the car a more modern HID look at night without worring about a conversion kit ..

what is the additional power consumption? i have power pulleys and don't want to tax the system too much

Changing the bulbs took about 5 minutes each. The head lights are a little tricky because after you release them.. you have to remove the top half of the cover ring and the headlamp cover.. It's only five screws but the ring cover is fragile.. Once you get the ring and cover off just release the spring clips and viola..



Flash, I was worried about power consumption and heat as well. But these bulbs consume the same amount of power as the stock bulbs (55/60 watts). They use a different type of gas so they only last half as long as standard halogens..

Caution: The application guide at Sylvaina's site is wrong. They call out a 9004 for the headlamp. The bulb for the 968 is a 9003, or H4 (same thing). This is a typical mistake on all application guides I have seen.

David,

You are correct.. the 1995 part is corect but the 1994 is not (see below). This brings up a good point about parts locators in general. I usually lookup 1995 parts first and then I look up the 1992 part.. Some sites don't even list a 1995 968... Frustrating...

Is this the same bulb?

RPM,

My car, '95 cab, uses the 9003st so I can only speak to that model year but I think there is a bulb replacement chart in the owners manual. I bought the bulbs at Advance Auto. The two pack is cheaper than buying the bulbs individually. I also saw a $5 off manufacturer coupon after I installed the bulbs. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Yep, Wally World carries the bulbs. I replaced mine on my truck a few months ago and noticed a large difference. Much whiter light and longer range as well. Thanks for the "cheap Mod" suggestion it is a good one.

I have a polar silver cab and thought the bluish light would look nice when I had on my fog lights at dusk. I'm going to replace my driving lamp with the Silver Stars though.



Also, I technically didn't use the Cool Blues... I'm using a bulb called "Blue Diamonds". Problem is that the package says "For OFF-ROAD use only in the US". I figure since the fog lamps are so close to the ground no one would notice. The Cool Blues packaging states that they are street legal in the US..

Let's not forget the H1 bulbs which serve as the high-beam element in the driving lights. So it's-
  • • [color="blue"]9003 (H4)[/color] for the main bulbs,

    • [color="blue"] H1[/color] for the highbeams, and

    • [color="blue"]H3[/color] for the fog/driving lights.

There are SilverStars for all these applications (and I believe for the US turn signals as well), and I'm glad to have learned about them from this thread.



The DIY is really quite simple (and is described in the manual):
  • • Turn your headlights on to raise them and remove the ignition key to leave them up but off.

    • If you have a glove/vanity cover over your radiator area, remove it.



       

    • Pull the triangular handles inboard of each headlight assembly in towards the center of the car to disengage a latch mechanism, permitting you to pull the headlight housing forward.



       

    • Remove the crescent-shaped trim ring and the headlight shroud, being careful not to lose screws and washers, or to break the molded plastic parts. It's a good idea to clean these parts while they're off (my SOP for everything except women's panties).



       

    • The bulb is held in place by a gasketed holder. It and the bulb itself are secured by two springy wire bails per headlamp, which you unclip and swing free. Clean and refresh the gasket (303 Protectant is good) if needed.

    • [color="red"]DO NOT TOUCH[/color] the glass bulb envelope: skin oils contaminate the surface and reduce bulb lifespan.

    • When the plastic trim pieces are back on you should be able to push the headlamp back into the mechanism and feel a subtle click as it engages. Try again, moving the triangular handle around, if it doesn’t take the first time.

High-beam and driving lights: a Phillips-head screwdriver and 8mm metric nutdriver or socket will get you in quickly and easily (barring corrosion). Start by removing the amber side marker light, and then on US-spec cars, the bumperette. Again: I think there's an (amber) SilverStar replacement for the turn signal bulb as well.

I was hoping to have some time to work on this DIY but I doubt that my attempt would have been any where near as good as yours. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/happy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />



I upgraded the bulbs on my wifes Benz last weekend and even though the H7ST were a big improvement, I noticed her lenses were a little dull. So I buffed them with some 900 grit sanding gel. The lenses look brand new.. I'm buffing the 968's lenses this weekend.
