993 or 996 Steering wheel

Hi,

Does anyone have a picture of a 996/993 airbag steering wheel installed in their 968? I see a lot of pictures of the RS wheel, but never of any other type of steering wheel.

Looks good Bracer. Is it smaller than the OEM? That disk is 15 1/2" as I recall. I'd like something 14" to 14 1/2". Does a 986 wheel work? I think those may be a bit smaller diameter.

Dunno if any of these fit, but some interesting looking items.

The one I got but haven't put on yet says it's from a turbo 993. It's the same diameter as ours. I was hoping it was a little smaller as well. It looks good but I haven't put it on yet. I've been too lazy to track down a clock spring...

I spoke with the guys at Porscheshop and according to them the 3 spoke wheel they sell can be fitted to a 968 without modification. I am very tempted!

I'd be leery of the "without modification" claim. Fitting a 993/996 wheel requires machining of the hub - that is otherwise too thick to allow the retaining nut to fit properly. At least, that's my (and others) experience. I'd be surprised if this wheel didn't require the same machining. Other than that - and the change of the clockspring mechanism - you're likely to be OK.

What does the machining involve? Is this something you have to get done by a professional or can i do it on my workbench?

You might be able to do it on your workbench - I certainly couldn't on mine. The center hub is too thick, so some material must be machined away from the front face of the hub to make the hub thinner. I don't have the dimension, but care must be taken because removing too much leaves insufficient strength and the hub breaks (I've heard of at least one such instance). If you have the tools needed (probably a lathe), then you could do it. In that case, I'd remove a little at a time, testing to see when there's enough removed to allow the large wheel retaining nut to have sufficient "purchase" (rotations) on the splined shaft that holds the wheel in place to secure the wheel.

I was looking into the three spoke wheel a few years ago. Chris @ TurboKraft in Phoenix, AZ was telling me about it, as he had installed a few on 968s. I do remember him mentioning that some kind of hub modification was required but that it wasn't difficult.

It's not technically difficult, you (or your machinist) just need to be cautious and not remove too much during machining. If you do, you will crack the wheel off from the hub rendering your new 3- or 4-spoke wheel completely useless.

Anchor's suggestion to remove a little at a time is very good advice. You really just need to make sure the retaining nut has enough engaged threads to hold the wheel onto the steering column shaft. Once you get everything centered/mounted, you can add a dab of Loctite medium thread locker and you'll be good to go....

Wow, I learned somrthing new today! I have the 964 look steering wheel...I never knew you could get your car with the 993 wheel from the factory. I wonder if you have a specail option code for that.

I suspect that in countries in which airbags were not mandated at the time of sale got the 964-style wheel 4 spoke wheel as standard. Probably depends on the market as to whether airbags were an option and when.
