968RS At Pocono
#1

Well I finally got The RS completed to test at Pocono. Had a good and bad weekend.

Ran the car on dyno last week and had boost issue. No boost! Like .4bar and very rich. My dyno guy said go run for the weekend, great for breakin. I proceeded to foul a plug first session. I came in and changed plugs and went back out. Even with low boost the car is fast. I was starting to catch some red run group guys when oops, a steering component broke. The steering knuckle below power booster cracked and I lost steering. Luckily it was in a slow section and I just drove off track . I am one lucky duck.

The good news:

First time car has been run and seen a track in ten years. It lives.

Car actually felt great out of the box. Handles and turns and grips great.

No oil or coolant leaks. I have installed larger radiator and oil cooler and this is always a concern first time out.

Crazy German fuel pump system works. 4 fuel pumps and a transfer pump

Car is awsome without power steering. Thanks Erik.

I can't wait to drive with some power. This car is going to fly..........

Hi Pete,

WELL DONE!!! Its brilliant to hear that its alive and kicking. It also seems that the suspension+Pocono demon raised its head again - glad you got away unscathed.

Karl,

I forgot about the Turbo Cup Suspension breakage at Pocono. Was lucky that time too. I guess I have 7 more lives to go.

BTW the RS has Charlie arms so no worries there.

The car took a big hit in Austria and I'm assuming this is left over damage. I'm going to have rack magnafluxed to make sure there aren't any issues there.

Holy Crap! You are a very lucky duck. Congrats on getting it on the track and ask your dyno guy if he meant by break in or breakin'

Good to hear you had a somewhat successful outing. Can you share any specs on the engine?

The steering feels good without power but it definitely requires more effort. My arms are a bit sore after a full weekend of racing - especially after dealing with a couple of hairpins every lap.

Eric, I had the engine rebuilt from the ground up. The bores were re-nikisiled with J&E 8:1 pistons. I left the stock Motronic setup to keep airbox and snorkle. they are such a trademark of the TS/RS. The snorkle actually fits up into the naca duct in hood. The factory hoods also have an extension downward to mate with snorkle. I will take a picture of that. Car has the K27/11 turbo as used by all RS's. The ADAG-GT RS's had to use a 42 or 43mm inlet restricter to limit the hp to 337. Stock throttle body is 52mm. I am not running the restricter and expect around 360-380 engine hp. I think that will be enough!!! The RS's had to weigh 2950 for the series. Mine weighs around 2600 I believe. I did run the car without power steering and hardly noticed it even in tight corners. It's going to stay that way.

Interesting, did you have anything special done (ie coatings) to the pistons to run in the stock bore? I thought J&E were usually run in steel sleeves.

I know the factory drivers side naca duct has a box end with a side exit towards the airbox, but there is an additional extension? I would like to see pictures of that.

My car is down to 2550 but with significantly less under the hood. I'm slowly sneaking up on a turbo engine. I just acquired a 2.7 N/A head for future use.

Keep us updated on how it progresses.

Eric,

The nikisil bore is much like steel and uses a similar ring package. The top ring is chromemoly and the second ring is cast iron. You have to use a different ring package for alusil.

BTW, I have another set of pistons if you're interested!

I need to take pictures of lots of stuff. Will do so soon

Did you do a Nikasil coating on a standard bore or are you using a factory RS block? I would think it would take more than different rings to run J&E pistons in a standard alusil bore. All the 951 guys would be doing it if it was that easy!

Eric,

All the 968TS/RS were nikisil. You can use J&E in alusil bore with 968 rings. You can also coat pistons with various substances.

So you are using an original TS/RS block - thats why I asked. Did it come with the yellow car? When I inquired about that car I was told the original engine was gone but there was a 951 engine that went with it. Was it actually the correct engine?

Eric,

I got the car with the original TS/RS block but the story is very weird. I went to see the car and it was a mess. I'm sure you saw photos.

I verified this info from the mechanic/race shop who took apart the car. It came into the states with a hot RS motor with a stand alone ignition and Stack dash. It also came with the original motor in a crate.

The owner gutted those things for the 968RSR he was building. The owner owned a VW dealership at the time. Then he lost due to poor financial decisions. The new dealership inherited the mess. After a few years of trying to sell as a roller they got the bright idea to install the crate motor. Nobody had a clue about its idenity and they thought it was a 951 motor. When I saw it i knew right away it was the right motor. There are quite a few visual clues I found to its RS treatment.

I just didn't think it would take over a year to piece it back together.

Wow, you got a great deal then. I got a bunch of pictures of it and it was a real mess. So sad. I was close to pulling the trigger, but with the cars condition and I was told the original engine was missing, so I passed. It seemed like too much $ for just a special VIN and what seemed like not many original parts left. Being on the other coast and the seller not knowing anything didn't help. I'm glad it is being returned to its rightful glory.
