Pocono Pro IT - mechical failure
#1

It was a tough effort getting to Pocono this weekend. Needed to do a brake job on the race car and a brake job on the motorhome. $$$$ ouch! Had to fix all the bashed in bodywork too from WGI.

I was feeling pretty good going out this Saturday for qualifying and was rolling along in P1 making some nice laps and then looped it pretty good going into Devils Elbow. No damage so I just keep hammering along.

Finished the session and all cars were impounded for inspection. Guys were going around with a ride height measuring device that looked pretty goofy to me. Of course these guys come to me and say, "your car is too low!". WTF I think, been this height for three seasons. Plus I understand that height is measured from the pinch weld near the rocker, not the rocker cover. I look at the rules and its vague, could be either. Good news is the chief steward is a reasonable guy and my penalty was forfeit of my fast qualifying time. It was the pole time but my second fastest put me third on the grid.

After that aggrevation I drive back to my paddock and hear a nasty sound coming from the rear - torn CV boot, grease cooked out, bearings gone. Dammit - I just replaced both CV joints too! Contacted a dozen places, RS Barn is the only shop that had the part (Pete is the man!) but it would have been impossible to run out get the part return install and make the grid.

So that ended my day and as a result my rival for the championship took the win and effectively clinched the championship. BUMMER! (You can bet axles and all related parts will be on my motorhome parts shelf next year.)

Here's a quick video of the start from up in the tower at Pocono. Was a great season with a Pro IT win and three NARRC wins. Pro IT got me on the mechanicals - DNF this weekend and a last place at NJMP due to a rear bearing problem. I thought my preventative mainenance program was pretty good but I need to step that up another level.

Figure I'll do one more race and 2011 will go into the books. Cheers!

That totally sucks Ben! That is terrible knowing you had just replced them! What caused it? Those things are supposed to last...

Oh well... It happens but I know that is not much consolation for you. You had a great season going. What happens if you rival also has a mechanical in an upcoming event or gets DQd?

I am supposed to be back at Pocono on Labor Day weekend.... The transitions to and from the infield are so messed up, and the track is so tough on suspension and motors that I am seriously considering not attending at all.

I heard that Pocono took down the walls closing off the South Infield so that it can be used now in the double infield configuration. Nonetheless, if it is anything like the north course entry coming off the Tunnel Turn, the foundation will still be there creating a huge chassis breaking speed bump. The one on the north course is so bad, we had a BMW literally break the rear suspension in half alongside a bunch of blown shocks...

You and the car look great. With a little luck on your side and everything on go, you are looking great for 2012... Which race you have left this year?

Yo Crespo - I was down ten points so even with a DNF my rival will win it :-(

Beware of Pocono - the track is sooo bumpy the volume of mechanical destruction was amazing. More blown shocks, blown tires, wrecked suspensions, broken wheels...the SCCA guys were about to riot over the conditions.

The transitions from the road course to the speedway and back are in the same league as speed bumps. My springs are around 600F 400R (something like that) so not very stiff. Guys running 800 and up were parking it...too brutal on the cars.

Ben, sorry to hear it didn't work out this year. With those spring rates, do you still have torsion bars on the car? Curious about your setup. Perhaps a PM or another thread...... You'll come back stronger next year!

P&S - I still do run the torsion bars on the rear per the rules and some helper springs. It's a stock setup M030 bars with Bilstein turbo cup dampers, camber plates, all racers edge hardware and solid bushings.

Next year I'll have a better spares package - that's the kicker. A $98 repair kit would have put me back out and kept me in the hunt! All part of racing

Like other have said that sucks. But what do you carry for spare parts? I have some belts, hoses, pads, rotors, filters, one front and one rear bearing, maybe a few other items. What others do you recommend.

I thought I had a pretty good spares package. I carry a clutch, front rotors, pads F&R, hoses, battery, relays and fuses, fuel filter, oil, oil filter, extra computer chips, ECU, trans fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, brake lines, 8 wheels and tires, rains, intermediates and extra set of unmounted slicks (12 counting what's on the car) brake ducts, alternator belt, duct hose, extra camber plates, spare shocks - there's more plus all the other cleaners, fluids clamps etc.

Didn't have a CV though...

Racing is still a fantasy for me, but I've done tons of track days, and seldom take more than a screwdriver with me. Guess I've been lucky, and foolish.

Well - two CV repair kits came today. I'll do the fix and now have another spare.

This spring I was looking at something like 6 sets of tires in my garage and started adding up the $$ and had to stop myself.
