968CS vs 997 911
#1

Hello, in the spirit of video's here is a video of me chasing down a good friend at Eastern Creek recently in a supersprint event, as part of the NSW (Australia) Porsche 2011 Club championship. My car is a 93 968CS and the leading class c car (power to weight class system), his is a 997 911 (the class b leading car) with GT3 spec suspension, a little weight reduction and a few other tweaks. It is the 997 Carerra featured in a recent issue of a Porsche mag, maybe 911 and Porsche world (?).

These laps are late in the day, and I am maybe a second or so off my pb, but was good fun and I was having a real go on a circuit I enjoy.

Enjoy.

What do you think? (oh....first lap is a warmup)

Nice. It looks like Eastern Creek has a good flow to it and you are getting more out of your car than your friend is.

I kept trying to duck to look under the mirror. It never worked.

Thanks. Yes, I hadnt spent much time on video's before, and we threw a go-pro HD camera into the car for fun on the cross over roll bar mount. Will have to lower it for next time!

Nice ride. Again can't beat the 968 in the corners.

Yes, the 968's capabilities never cease to amaze me. At my very first DE event's first classroom session, the instructor was comparing the cornering characteristics of several cars, and was particularly complimentary about the way the 911 allows you to keep the power on in the corners, and get on the gas earlier than, say, a Corvette. But judging from this video, the 911 has nothing on the 968. The 968 is just a real sleeper of a race car; not many people know about them, so their capability seems to catch a lot of people off guard.

Awesome Video.

We are going to explore new limits of 968 engine and chassis capabilities . There are so many race classes where the 968 can compete and we are looking to add power, aero, braking and chassis upgrades.

Possibly we can get some some positive press for 968's in racing mags.

Looks good, so on the other side of the equator you don't need a full roll cage for racing?

Sounds like a great time to be building a 968 track car.

Nice going Mark. Seems like you're really coming to terms with the car as a whole after the work that has gone into it. Eastern Creek is a real 'momentum' track

which we need to really keep the speed up through the corners. A lot of off camber corners which don't show up so much in the video. Your car looks like

you're achieving that nicely.

ps...Chris Stannard's S2 did a 1.43 on the weekend!! On slicks...but still?!?! Don't think he was driving it as he shared it. Nevertheless.

A lot of time and money has gone into that car even though it doesn't look like it.

Thanks Pat, appreciate the comments. I didn't know you viewed this board. Cool. My car really is feeling and going extremely well after sorting it last season. My sole focus to date has been handling and brakes, all with a view of getting into and out of the corners as fast as possible.

P.S. Tom and I were within 0.04s per lap, he was actually in that car of Chris's, both of us on semi-slicks, last round! Really good fun. I am looking forward to seeing you and your new race car build soon.....eta? Will you be at the Wakefield round shortly?

Yes I pop in from time to time. Looks like it's all working for you nicely Mark. Brakes and suspension is the main thing that an n/a car would deal with. The Creek's a funny track. Really have to keep off the brakes as much as possible and just flow from corner to corner. Where to from here for you.

I've heard that a lot of work has gone into Chris' car. To go from 1.50 to a 1.43 just because of slicks doesn't seem possible?? Check out the times in car 44. Maybe he's slipped in a sneaky supercharger??

Here's nice graph comparing my car with 255/35/18's to Gt3Mk2 - Both have Toyo's as a tires.

My car is with black line, and Gt3mk2 with red. My 968 get's higher lateral G's than the gt3!!

Corner is one example from Finnish track Botniaring.

If 968 had 350hp it would definitely eat Gt3's..!

Hi guys. FYI, I have done some further shock tuning, on the bump aspects, which has yielded really good results. I am now leading the Porsche NSW, Australia Championship in both my class ( http://www.pcnsw.com.au/PorscheClubs/pc_nsw/files/2009_PCNSW_Classes_v1_0.pdf ) and outright with 1 round to go for the year.

In the last round I really had a 'perfect day'. I smashed my pb at Eastern Creek with a 1m48.73 '968 lap record' vs a previous pb of 1m.50.00. I was pulling 1.5g laterally on my best corners on new semi slicks.

Then again, most of my mates are attributing it to my new decal set, worth 'at least half a second' according to them!!! I will try to get some pics with the 18" race wheels, in matt black, this weekend and post them too.

Regards

More decals should result in even faster times...

Excellent!
