i don't understand wanting to put things on a car that say something that it isn't. somebody explain that one to me.
My idea to put a 968 RS badge on my car wasn't to create a copycat or badge it something that it isn't. Porsche never made a 968 RS. They only made a CS. The car I build was my idea of what an RS would be if Porsche had built it. So I considered badging it as an RS, as that is what I felt I created. The aero, chassis, and performance worthy of an RS badge were all there.

This quote sums it up perfectly and what I set out to build with my 968

"The best cars in the world are not your generic grocery getters. They aren't the Honda Accords and Toyota Camrys that run forever with barely an oil change, rarely (if ever) leaving you stranded, and lulling you to sleep on the highway. No, the best cars in the world are the ones that slap cartoonish grins on your face. They are so raw and unapologetic about their purpose that they make you bow before their race-like suspension and impractical interiors. Their sole purpose is to make driving fun.

CLK AMG63 Black interior:

focused seats, but there's A/C & a radio

Think Porsche's line of RS cars. From the 964 Carrera RS or the slightly less aggressive RS America. To the 996 GT3 or 997 GT3-RS. If your unfamiliar with similar offerings outside of the USA, there's the Renault Megane R26.R. Normally a mundane, economical hatchback, Renault saw fit to tweak the engine, install a roll-cage, some fixed-back racing seats, exchange the rear glass for some plexi-glass and toss the radio and A/C. A couple years back, Mercedes, purveyor of all things comfy and luxurious did an about-face and presented the CLK AMG 63 Black Series. Compared to the “basic” AMG model, this CLK was a bit more wild – more power, stiffer suspension, less equipment. But they kept A/C, they kept the radio. They ditched the navigation system.

In a tiny segment of the automotive world, where performance is paramount, where BMW saw fit to fit the European-market-only E46-chassis M3 CSL with a cardboard floor and tires only suitable for a perfect sunny day, Mercedes provided just enough creature comforts in their badass “RS” car to not detract entirely from the sole purpose of these focused contraptions – driving. To some, they may have encouraged increased driving focus. Where as many of the previous cars mentioned sacrificed all comforts for the sake of an undiluted driving experience, Mercedes saw fit to leave the basic creature comforts, allowing the driver to focus solely on driving. All the normal sacrifices and omissions would be great if every road was glass smooth and traffic didn't exist.

Corrado RS interior takes shape

But such is not life. I don't want the car designed to put smiles on my face relegated to the race track or an 82* day, with no clouds, and a closed road because that's the only way to avoid traffic. No, I want the smiles accessible in all but the most inconvenient times. I want uncompromising compromises. So I set out to build one.

Introducing the Corrado RS."

Fox - Flash is just crankier than usual today :-) Run your badges and enjoy the drive! Back in '95, I put a little ///M badge on the front grille of my E36 M3. The E30 M3 and the E34 M5 came with 'em, but the E36 M3 didn't. I just thought it would look cool, and it wasn't false advertising, so why not? Tho putting M badges on non-M cars is, of course, a sin of the highest order.

As long as we're confessing our decal sins, I'll admit that I have a small tri-color M sticker on the right rear window of my Imola Red X5. It's just the M colors stripe (not the letter M) ... but it's okay since my X5 is painted an M-only color. I also have a Nurburgring decal (not the track outline one) on the left rear window. I've been to the Ring ... not in my S. Carolina built X5, but still. My wife and I rode in the Ring Taxi (wife rode in the back and was nauseas all night). I believe my stickers were all earned.....and they make the cars faster too.

btw -- I can't tell you how many times people (mostly at gas stations) have asked me about my BMW of Maui license plate frame. "Did you really buy that car in Maui?" I get it all the time. "No, but I bought the license plate frame there. Much easier to fit into my suitcase."

I have the odd hobby of collecting license plate frames when I travel. It's more interesting than buying t-shirts.

I guess it would cost $1000+ to spell out

NineSixtyEight

Maybe I'll just buy that "hybrid" badge Porsche now sells. That'll go well with my "Historic" license plate.

oh, please be creative. it makes me nuts when people waste their opportunity to do something unique, and instead state the obvious, like the model. it would be like putting the name of the color of the car on it. duh

If I'm going to blow that much money, I'd be creative. Don't worry.

It's also possible to customize the decals that go along the sides of the car. This could be hilarious.

I've been studying the listings of UK 968 Sports. Some have standard seats, some have power windows, and a few have AC. Granted that most Brits aren't as fat as we 'Mericans, but I don't see where the weight savings comes from. Did all 968 Sports at least have the M030 sport package?

Either way, I still want one of those "Sport" script badges. Badges, I like my stinkin' badges.
I think you've mistaken some CS models for Sports. The UK only Sport model is an 968 CS equipped with the following comfort options:

- M197 Heavy battery and alternator

- M273 Outside mirrors, electrically adjustable and heatable

- M346 Standard color rims (silver)

- M381 Basic seat left, manually adjustable

- M382 Basic seat right, manually adjustable

- M451 Prepared for radio

- M534 Alarm System

- M650 Sunroof

- M651 Power windows

- M685 Split rear seat and electrical hatch release

Most weight saving options we made undone in other words. The total number of cars sold as Sport model is 306 ('94 136, '95 172). The more desirable options were hardly ever fitted to these cars. There purpose was mainly offering a better priced 968 Coupe rather than a diehard sport model like the CS. Only one (!) Sport had the M030 option factory fitted while only 14 were equipped with a limited slip diff. None of them had A/C. All cars had the exact same seats in black full cloth.

Please note that the CS models also did not have M030 or M220 as standard equipment. The CS did come standard with bucket seats although they could be replaced by the dull seats as mentioned above at no extra costs.

From the 968 Buyer's Guide:

"The UK-only Sport can be hard to distinguish from a standard car, especially when it's loaded with options such as leather seats. Indeed, many a so-called standard car had the optional Sport suspension that made it, to all intents and purposes, the same as the Sport itself."

This statement seems to infer that the Sport suspension was something standard on the "Sport" models. However, I do see that the M030 option and LSD were stand alone options even for the Club Sport. So other than decontenting and special wheels and seats, what was unique about the CS or Sports in terms of suspension? It appears they rode about 20mm lower than standard cars, but so do the M030 cars.

The CS is purported to be this magical handler, but aside from stripping out some weight, what made it so good? Just the cheaper sales price?

it may have been a special wishes option. I know they made sport decals like that for the front fender for 944's as well as 968's. there was actually a Porsche promo 968 which had the fender "sport decal" I can dig up pics and post it. that said, it is most likely a custom decal.

The Buyer's Guide you're referring to is wrong regarding seat options. No CS nor Sport model left the factory with either leather and/or power adjustments. I do have the factory data of all 968s in a database so I can tell.

Regarding the suspension you're right, they do differ. The differerence between the regular 968 and non M030 CS (and Sport) are the front springs which are shorter in combination with a lower setup for the rear axle. I own both a CS and a 968 Coupe and can confirm that the CS drives and handles better. I have the impression that the steering wheel also makes a big difference. It seems that a couple of small changes can make a big difference!
