968 Sport badge
#1

Does anyone know where I can find the black "Sport" badge that adorned the right rear of the UK-only 968 Sports?

Are these available from UK Porsche dealers?

Also, the US M030 cars are essentially the same as the UK 968 Sport except got the steering wheel, correct?

not really.

the US M030 cars had a variety of performance parts in the package, but NOT the weight saving deletion of parts that was part of the Sport or Club Sport. the sport kept about half of the deletions of the Club Sport for a total of 66 of the 110lb difference between the standard model and the Club Sport added back into the Sport. the Sport had most of the Club Sport stuff, but not all of it. not sure about the steering wheel.

keep in mind that the weights are also before options are added, so the difference between a standard car and a Club Sport is usually more like 220lbs, and 150lbs between the Sport and the Standard.

I've been studying the listings of UK 968 Sports. Some have standard seats, some have power windows, and a few have AC. Granted that most Brits aren't as fat as we 'Mericans, but I don't see where the weight savings comes from. Did all 968 Sports at least have the M030 sport package?

Either way, I still want one of those "Sport" script badges. Badges, I like my stinkin' badges.

as near as i can tell, they all had the M030 package, which is limited to the brake and suspension parts.

not sure if the sports had lsd as standard

the weight savings came from a LOT of places. each seat motor is 3.5# and each one is an option. sound deadening, i'm not sure if the wiring harness is even the same (you'd be surprised what copper weighs), stereo components, yada yada.

you would be amazed at how much weight there is that can be peeled out of these cars. i yanked out over 200# without losing a single creature comfort. the sport and club sport are quite different than the standard car.

i think the manufacturer's serial number badging is super light on the club sport and sport too. lol. badges or no badges though, that's what we look at, and that's definitely what race stewards look at. is it the real deal or not? regardless of whether they are accurate or not, clones and replicas don't count. it's like knock-off shoes or watches. they just aren't the same, and everybody knows it. it may not make sense, but it is what it is.

as for finding the badge, i think you'll have to go to the UK for that, as it was never available here. good luck.

How much weight can I save if I ditch the heat shield and the strut tower brace?

Well, I know enough not to put the CS badge on my car, but I wish there was some way to advertise that I spent extra money to buy a factory M030 car with <acronym title='Limited Slip Differential'>LSD</acronym>. Maybe a personalized plate on the car can do that. I'm torn now between two plates for the lovely Amazon / Magenta car.

I could go with M030LSD

Or I could stick with MANGINA

funny

personally i prefer not to advertise. i like the sleeper effect. nobody knows what i have going on in the car until it's too late.

as for personalized plates, i hate the obvious and really like clever ones.

mangina is hilarious.

you've got a one of a kind car. something that says that might be cool. 1OFAKND

I suspect that "MANGINA" would barely make it to the DMV in basket let alone the light of the out basket. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.png" class="smilie" alt="" />

I'd stick with Mangina, Shenis is to close to Shemale for my comfort zone. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Back on topic, I found a kindly British bloke who offered to find and price a script "Sport" badge for me tomorrow. Might cost me a few quid, but it's a nice bit of kit that shouldn't make me look like a total wanker. Maybe I should have him price me a bonnet, spanners, and tyres too.

I almost installed an RS badge on mine, as I essentially built what could have been a factory n/a RS (similiar in concept to the factory 993 RS....more power, more suspension, more aero, more chassis, etc) You can always get an S badge and have your car badged as a "968 S". If you take that route, I would get a new 968 badge as well so you could center them correctly, otherwise the S will be off. Enter and more to the right.

i don't understand wanting to put things on a car that say something that it isn't. somebody explain that one to me. i have the same problem with cobra emblems on kit cars. they are not cobras, no matter how close they look. they are cool cars, and in many cases actually better cars than the original, but they are not the original. it's like a bra stuffed full of kleenex. no matter how well she molds that kleenex, it's still kleenex, and when you get down to it, you ultimately find out the disappointing truth.

i also don't get the idea behind putting stuff on the car to advertise that it's fast or whatever. stickers and such just beg for you to be hassled, challenged, or pulled over by the cops. i considered a "supercharged" emblem on my car, but thought better of it, deciding instead to remain "under cover"

It's just for fun. Not trying to pass something off as the genuine article. I get the Cobra logo. It's a car that is built to be a Cobra. Same with the Speedster and 550 Spyder replicas. It's a tribute car.

While I wouldn't slap a M badge on a non-M BMW, I think this Sport badge is a little different. If I put it on the car (not even sure I will), it would be to denote the M030 sport package. It's clearly not a RHD UK car. And I'm not trying to pass it off as a Club Sport, hence not considering the CS badge at all.

My car was optioned from the factory with the model designation delete option. If I keep it strictly stock, I won't even add the 968 badge.

Maybe I'll try to find a 959 badge and add that.

yeah - i don't get the whole "copycat" thing. it cheapens the real deal, and i find it insulting to the real mccoy.

in the case of the cobra, i've had the opportunity to drive the real deal, both big and small block. i actually prefer driving some of the kits, but fiberglass is not the same as aluminum, doesn't drive the same, and doesn't feel the same (there is one aluminum body kit out there though). the engines, suspensions, brakes and driveline are usually different too. most of the kits do not in any way resemble the real cobra, beyond body lines, and even those are wrong on a lot of them. i've seen bigger hips, longer wheelbases, and all sorts of changes to try to incorporate a top. that's fine if you want to build a cool car, but don't put the cobra emblem on it.

the 550 spyder replicas are right up there on that list too. there is one model of the beck that is passed by porsche, but they don't sell a lot of those. what they do sell are the higher output models with a few goodies. i don't think they put a 550 emblem on those cars though, and instead it gets a beck emblem.

as a collector of cars over the years, when i come across a car that bears the emblems or a rarer model, but is not that model, i find it only hurts the people who have the real deal. it cheapens the brand, and creates a general feeling that the real thing is not that different than the "copy", so why bother buying the real thing? in reality it is very different to those who have the real thing.

that being said, i have less of a problem if you do EVERYTHING exactly as the factory did, right down to the last nut and bolt. no halfway stuff. that's why i don't have a problem with calling a car an M030 car IF it had everything in the package, and was installed like from the factory. if you're going to copy something it has to be a real copy. but, that means that you can't deviate and improve on it, unlike what you could do with the real thing. with the real thing, it still has the cornerstone of legacy, but a copy loses that the moment it diverts from the package, and just becomes another modified standard car.

when i go to car shows, it makes be nuts to spot a car from across the lot, thinking it's something special, just to find out somebody stuck an emblem on it. i would have appreciated the car for what it was, but seeing that it's a fake, my attitude shifts and i think much less of it, and start looking for flaws. i know an awful lot of car show geeks that feel the same way. oddly, they are all older though, so maybe this is just something that comes with age?

by the way, i feel this way about pretty much anything. cover bands are the same for me. if you want to play the songs, that's fine, but play a different arrangement.

also by the way, i have removed all porsche related emblems from the outside of the car, with the exception of the font on the rear, and only because i have not figured out a way to do that without it looking goofy.

but, everybody is free to do what they want to their own car. i've certainly done some things that others would find quite objectionable. i don't for a minute presume to understand everybody's motivations. this one just escapes me.

I never much enjoyed the M318i or the M528e cars I spotted every once in a while, but I don't think it cheapened my E30 M3 or my E28 M5.

As luck would have it, the English gentleman emailed me this morning to tell me that his understanding is that Porsche UK made the "Sport" script badges and stopped doing so around 1995. I'm not sure that anybody even makes a reproduction part. So I may not be able to even get one. Of course, the unobtainium status of something like this makes me want one even more.

How do feel about people changing their steering wheels or radios or seats? I'm good with it as long as the owner keeps all of the original parts so that the car can be changed back to factory spec at any given time. Do you get upset at a car show when you see aftermarket floormats?

The PCA is much nuttier about this stuff than the BMWCCA or even the FCA. My father once lost points at a concours when his 1971 911T was found to have grease on the manual radio antenna. That's like having points deducted for having oil in your engine.

yeah - no issues here. i'm all for doing whatever creative things you want to the car. don't read too much into my blathering. it's only an opinion. it just bugs me when i see false advertising. it's happened to me a few times. i get all excited to see a club sport here in the states, and then find out it's not. just a bummer really.

lol - i have an attic full of the OEM removed parts. after 9 years, i am only now beginning to sell them off. but, that's because i never plan to sell the car. i had my last toy for 25 years. i expect this one to be no different.

Technically that is the right kind of horsey from the Porsche emblem but we all assume it's from an F car. For me, I am a little above Flashes stealth mode. I didn't want Supercharged on my car either but opted to get the Porsche letters for the 968 "CS" and turn them around to 968 SC; that's it - 2 letters - 4000.00 each <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.png" class="smilie" alt="" />
