968 or a 944 Turbo S for the track?

If you missed Jim's NASA video then you might have also missed this one:

IMO, it is even better. I've never seen so many passes.
In NASA my car is classed as GTS2. Since I was forced to start from the back, some of the cars I passed were in GTS1, a slower class based on lbs/hp. Those cars were prettty easy to drive right by on the straight. The cars that I had to pass under agressive braking were GTS2 cars and a faster class GTS4 car.

Regarding going off line to pass and barely keeping it on the track, but making the pass stick, that's what racing is all about.
Ah, ok that make sense Jim. I didn't realise there were cars with different hp classes out there. I particularly like the part where the white 911 just pulled away from you with power, you went past him through the corner leading onto the back straight, he then pulled past you again for you to re-pass under brakes at 'your' corner. Also I noticed a bit of understeer scrub at the next corner a few times. Was this just being a bit off line and trying to cement the overtake? What sort of tyres and sizes do you run? I watched it again. Love it. Yes I know the racing line and the perfect line are often not the same.

Thanks for the info.

Yes saw this one too. I only hope the visibility was better than from the camera. Man that was wet! How about some of that standing water in that turn out the back of the course? Woah. Can't imagine that there are no bumps and bruises going on out there. Great to watch.

After a number of years instructing and racing - I think the tide has turned towards 968's. Granted there are a few really quick 944 Turbo's (Ken Laborde for example) but that is a really well prepared car with years of tweaking. Between the reliability, lack of turbo lag, aero dynamics, I think the 968's are the way to go now. Gary Grigsby, Jim Child, Charled Geer have been podium cars for years, Rich Tillotson podiumed this year at Sebring and is really driving well, and i think I finally have my car tweaked correctly, my co-driver turned a 2:31 in his 3rd lap in my car, and we went from about 45th to 9th in the enduro and he was consistently among the fastest car in the race, we had the overall lead at one point. I'll try to attach a link to the first 2 laps of the enduro where he passes 16 cars. Hope you enjoy!

I run Hoosiers 245/35/18 front and 285/30/18 rear. As you can see I was pushing the car pretty hard in an effort to climb up through the field. That can take a toll on the tires, particularly the fronts when making repeated aggressive passes under hard braking. After a while the fronts started to go off a little resulting in a bit of understeer.

Wow!! Awsome video. Thanks for posting it. Who was your co-driver? He just taught me a couple of new places to pass at Sebring.

His name is Tanner Baker - he is the 20 yr son of a good friend of mine and races in the Koni Challenge Series and teaches at Panoz Race School.

He was really incredible - he wasn't the fastest car but he barely was slowed down by traffic - he really knows how to drive in traffic and he really helped getting my car setup.

Yes great stuff and great through the traffic. What was that 914 guy doing just at the end of the clip? He just seemed to stand on the brakes right in front of 'Us' (lol).

That was nice driving. What a swarm of 911s to get thru! My favorite part is when the white 911 out powers him down the straight but gets blown away at the next corner.

I liked that one too. That was going into Turn 17. Turn 17 at Sebring is the widest corner you'll ever see at any track. There are an infinite number of lines through that corner. If a faster car is determined to get by you, there is no way to fend him off in Turn 17.

Sebring looks fun. I'd love to try it. The tow would be a bit much. Mapquest lists it as only 3200 miles and 47 driving hours away from me.

holy cow! that was some pretty ballsy late-braking there. . . into the tight right hand turn about 2/3 in. . . whoa!

pretty intense video. . . and nice to see our car waxing so many 911's.

we actually have a power advantage over a 964, don't we?

Man there was a lot of traffic at the start of the enduro.

I love watching the 968 going into and coming out of the corners in all the videos.

Nope. They're rated at 247 hp.

Jim is right - we definitely do not have the power advantage over the 911's, but we can definitely out brake and usually out handle them. At sebring (my home track) I notice we are usually faster through turns 1,16,17 and definitely what is called Bishop's Bend - I personally do most of my passing in turn 17 and bishop's ben - because I am really comfortable there.
