968 not starting/cranking
#1

so...i have to get to work tmro and my baby isn't starting, <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/sad.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

bad connection on a starter I'm hoping... the thing that sucks is that my car is on an incline driveway and I can't pull her into the gerage!!!!

I had to move the car in the morning, she had a hard(ish) time starting, kinda sputtered but she started...

I went to go start it about 20 min. ago and i got about 3 s***ty cranks out of it then it gave out, no clicking

so I take the first step and try to jump her, but i still get nothing, it makes the one initial click when i turn the key all the way, but nothing after that..

help me guys! plz!

what do i do?!?!

Hey Rob,

Is your car an everyday driver??? Theese cars tend to drain the battery if they sit for any period of time.

Check if you have headlights. If not its a bad battery.

Sunset Porsche in Oregon has (at least I assume they still have) rebuilt starters for about $100. Replacing the starter is very easy. So, on this car, a dead starter isn't really too big of a deal. Good luck.

check your cables, and your main ground - they must be tight and clean - a loose or bad connection will not allow full completion of the circuit - as soon as a large load is applied, it will cut out

also, check the water level in the battery - use distilled water to top off

sounds like bad ground like Flash says. this is similar to the 'dying' battery poor cranking...

Could still be the starter. you can jump the starter if you know how...

use a jumper cable to connect the negative side of the battery to the engine. if the ground cable is bad and the battery is good, the car will start.with this "test".

I hate to suggest a doomsday scenario, but check to see if everything is OK with your belts, make sure Balance Shaft belt did not break or slip...

Do not try to jump start until you have looked!

Fingers crossed,

Jay, good thought on the belts!!! That would not be good if the timing belt broke.

I had just had to replace my starter and I got it from Autozone for under 100 bucks and works perfectly.

Good luck

idk if its the belt...i turn the key and i get no noise...i'm assuming i'd be able to hear the starter trying to crank right?

today has been a really busy/hectic day, so I haven't really even looked into the car yet, lol.

tomorrow i'll check connection's and if everything is good there...I'll probably buy a rebuilt starter, would rather keep the car more or less original,

...wouldn't feel right if i had an autolite starter....lol....is that just me?

thx for your help guys,
