968.net Warning!!!!
#1

Checking in on the .net forums I just got redirected to this serious warning from my McAfee Security software:

WARNING!

65.61.16.109/forum/default.asp may try to steal your information.

Why were you redirected to this page? We believe this site may be trying to trick you into entering your financial or personal information. This is a serious security threat which could lead to identity theft, financial losses or other dissemination of personal information.

Not sure of the validity of the warning, but McAfee is pretty good and I keep it constantly updated. With all of .nets security breaches it is very possible that a trojan virus has gained control of the site and is 'phishing' visitors for personal info. I'm going to stay away.

Sad.

It's probably because of some McAfee update and it does not like going directly to an ip address.

And, again I ask, "Where is the evasive Ray Starbird, and why does everyone seem so patient with him?" His obvious lack of interest in .net combined with his reluctance to turn it over to someone who will maintain it is puzzling, unless he derives income from it. Am I the only member who is disgusted with him?

I doubt that's a valid warning. Your s/w noticed that the character string in the address changed from alpha to numeric. And, as Mark mentioned 968.net site calls an IP address instead of using the alpha characters. It's been that way since day 1...

Well... McAfee never had a problem with it before so I am going to stay away.

I haven't logged on to .net in about a week (until today) and it's very sad the amount of crap being posted, can't even tell what's real any more. I went over to "the club" to see what they had to say and someone commented about the real traffic from .net not moving to there, made me think about the tread here before about lack of posts, it seems to go in spurts.

it is sad to see .net go this way, but we all knew it was inevitable - fortunately it isn't the end of the world

lol - of course they will say that the "real traffic" went there - however, i've been watching it on and off, and there hasn't been any real traffic at all - really it's just been he standard "ooh nice pic" "hey great to see you here" kind of stuff - the resources are still bleak, and more importantly, you still can't speak your mind, or offer an opinion which differs from those who would like to think of themselves as the definitive authority - if you disagree with some of the members there, you get banned immediately (sometimes even before you do) - that kind of censorship and discrimination just has no place in modern society, but so be it

this is the predominant site now - it has much better organization, resource capability, and is purely a 968 site - it is also open to all who want to come (as long as they behave like adults) - these are things that site will likely never be - it is likely destined to be a private little club that anybody can join, as long as they think the same, walk the same, talk the same........(you can have your ford any color you want, as long as it's black)

however, the upside is that it has been very nice since that little sandbox was created - there haven't been any arguments at all

once again, thanks to eric for taking the high road - you did the community a great sevice by setting this site up and making it what it is today

Am I the only guy who's pissed off at Starbird for not giving a damn about all the members who want to keep NET alive? Does he hold something over your collective heads that prevents you from criticizing him?

I am completely puzzled.

Took a peak with a 'redline' machine here at work - 12 new posts, 9 of which are mortgage or porn spam.

I'm done with the place, and if you know what is good for you...

gryphon - your feelings are not alone for certain - however, most people are just disappointed

ray has his reasons i'm sure - he told me he was just too busy to focus on the site - he no lnger had the car, and his priorities had shifted - however, he didn't want to let it go - denial, maybe, but also his right - so, i can't really fault him for his choices - i can be bummed, but that's about as far as i'm entitled

the upside is that due to what he has done, we now have a much better site here - this would probably never have happened had he not abandoned .net

so, in the end, as a community, we really won, and i think of it as a plus and not a minus

No I'm not pissed at Ray, although I wish he had passed the site on to someone who could have maintained it. He gave us all a great place to meet and a great resource for sharing knowledge of 968s before anyone else. It's a shame it has degraded to what it is now but that is the way things go sometimes.

could have been a case of "simpler to let it die than to rebuild it"

it was in serious need of a remodel, and it was probably a boat load of work to do it - sometimes it's just better to tear the house down and build a new one rather than to fix it - sure seems to be a popular theme out here

Have you ever known someone or had a neighbor or something that parked a nice or collectable car and just let it sit. Weeds grow around it, it deteriorates, but still they refuse any offer to sell it. They have some attachment to it and some delusional idea that they are going to restore it someday. It is sad, but it is their car so they can let it rot. Ray is apparently like this with .net and has some attachment to it that defies logic.

yeah - when i spoke to him about this, that was the feeling i got too - like you say, sad, but it is his to do with as he pleases - or not - lol

to continue the alanogy though, the saddest part for me is to see the local hoodlums tagging the car with graffiti and dumping their junk mail in the front seat

The spam posts could happen on any forum. The difference is that most forums are managed. I delete 2-5 accounts a day that sign up using email addresses that have some sort of identifier that they will be spamming. Many of the email addresses come from the same domain. I wish Ray would have worked with me to migrate the content over. However I think over the past 2 years we have collected the majority of the important information through new posts. Not to mention finding the information you needed to see was almost impossible to find on .net.

I am glad everyone has found this site to be helpful and we will continue to keep the 968 spirit alive. You can mark my words if I get to a point where I no longer wish to manage this site I will pass the baton. However I do not foresee that happening anytime soon.

Thanks,

Eric

I second the motion for CHEERS for Eric! Thank you for providing and managing a great forum for us 968ers. I'm new to using the site, and it's already proving invaluable....now can't imagine being without it and everyone's help. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

True Dat! Other than one or maybe two posters whose contributions I miss here, the group I'll call the "right coast contingent" and their all knowing posts got old real quick.
