transaxle plug needed
#1

If anyone parting a 6 speed 968 has the rubber plug / cover which goes on the REAR transaxle casing - I'm told it's a weird shape ( trapezoid-like ) - and wants to sell it, please send me a PM

I ordered it from the dealer only to be advised three days later that it has been discontinued and there are none in the U .S. I checked with the local Porsche salvage yard ( the largest in the Bay Area..)and no luck, so before I start calling junk yards around the country, thought I'd ask here ..

I've had very good luck with Oklahoma Foreign. If nobody here has one, I would start with those guys. You may only end up having to make one call. Good luck.

cool, thanks will ring them up

this whole " discontinued " parts trend for our cars worries the heck out of me. I hate to think we might end up with a 3,000 lbs paperweight because some essntial mechanical part is discontinued and there are neither aftermarket nor salvage yard replacements for it

Next time you're at Bob's house, take it off his when he's not looking... Problem solved.

You might also try DC Automotive. I wouldn't call them the least expensive salvage/parts yard, but they do have lots of stuff and, in my experience, are good to deal with... YMMV.

lol - yeah - since i never drive the car, and certainly not in the wet weather, what's the harm, right?

The problem is that I don't drive the car in the rain either, so I can't get to Bob's house during the time when his car is stationary and ready for pilfering As for the price of this plug, when it was available at the dealer it was only $ 18 , so a used one from the salvage yard might not be a big concern, unless they know it's a discontinued item and now want $ 500 for it

i too struck out any place i tried

ok - so, if somebody wants to yank theirs and send it to me, i can work on getting them made - i have an idea about how to proceed - i just don't want to yank mine, as it has already been out once, and i'm not inclined to push my luck

alternatively, it is possible that the audi from which the case came used the same nose and might have the same plug

I was going to suggest VW or Audi as well...I'll see if my parts car has it intact.

Great find Paul, Smile Thanks ! Too late to call Atlanta now, but I'll ring them up in the morning after I talk to Bob - guessing they have only one so he might want to get it first and take down the specs for a re-production of these, and then send it to me, or I'll order it, otherwise..

ordered it from atlanta. as it turns out, dc automotive found one also ( $ 10 ) but since they have a minimum order policy of $ 75.. and since I really did not need anything else for $ 65 , i spent $ 20 on the atlanta one. they also have a minimumm, but it's only $ 25, so I bought a parts catalog just to have this damn cover sent ... sheesh..

Auto Atlanta's catalog ( which I ordered ONLY because I needed to add at least another $ 5 to meet the minimum $ 25 order requirement ) arrived BY ITSELF, with the shipping document indicating that the transaxle cover is " NO LONGER AVAILABLE ") Gee, but thanks for sending me a $ 10 catalog guys ..

I will. And until another used plug surfaces, or one with D1 stamped on it is available, it's duct tape . Not that I need it, I don't drive the car in mud, rain, gravel, or other road conditions where junk would find it's way in there, but just for peace of mind it can't hurt to tape it over.

Sorry about that Dave. I have purchased from there and I thought they were reputable but obviously NOT. Definitely demand you money back.

I regret not sharing my experience with Auto Atlanta. I did the exact same thing a few months back. I ordered a cosmetic disc (pn 99970416840) for the Tip shifter which is NLA, but they had it listed in their catalog. I tacked on another $150 in parts to qualify for a shipping rate and sent a message saying if the part was indeed NLA, please cancel the entire order. They payed no heed to my message and shipped all other parts, for which I paid a premium. I will not be using them in the future.

I prefer Pelican Parts. They tell you straight up if they have the part in stock or if it's a special order from the dealer or Germany.

I never did find the part, but I think I could make one fairly easily. I think it's just black foam.
