968 after 911
#1

I had a 1982 911 Targa which hydroplaned in a rainstorm and rear-ended a wall at 55mph - totalled. I used the insurance check to replace it with a 1992 968. Looking forward to hanging out here, pick up the car in VA this week, will drive it back to TX with my son!

Welcome,

One of the best qualities of the 968 is the nearly perfect 50/50 weight balance.

Enjoy the site,

Jay

Glad you were ok after that incident , but great choice for a switch - I drove a 1980 SC for abut a year, switched to a 944 in the mid 80s when they were released, and was shocked at how much better that car drove vs. the 911. And the 968 is in a different league ( a lot more power and same 50/50 weight platform ) . Enjoy it for many miles to come ..

I went from an 83 911SC to a 968 after my 911 was totaled Seems like a trend here. Welcome.

I hope all you guys that replaced totaled 911/912s with 968s had Agreed Value policies and pocketed a chuck of change when you "upgraded" to a 968.

Me, I owned a '79 SC at the same time I owned my 968. I'd store the 911 and use my 968 as a DD until I'd think I should just sell the 911. Then I'd get it out and drive it and realize what a great driving experience it was. Rare and unrefined compared to a 968, but a lot of fun. Now I get the "raw and unrefined" from a Beck Spyder, like I like.

I think you have to appreciate the differences in the 968 and 911 while driving the two. Comparisons are pointless. Enjoy the subtleties of the driving and power. I fired up the race car yesterday after I moved it around the garage in preparation for the first event and thought man this car is cool. Of course after making the 997.2 my daily driver the differences between the two are huge and weigh heavy. It will be interesting to be back on the track with now a very much slower car.

With all due respect, I disagree that comparisons between the two cars are pointless . Of course there are significant differences, but we're most certainly entitled to a preference between one and the other, no ?

When my 911 was totaled prices were not where they are today so a 968 was around the same money I got from my insurance company. If only it had happened recently.

Like RAP I have a much more powerful 911 (mine is a 996.2 with a Raby 3.8L and ROW M030) and the driving experience is totally different. The 968 is actually a nicer road trip car, more room, comfortable and easy to drive the way I have it set up. The 911 is more visceral.

It's fun contrasting them when I switch between the two.

We had our first real day of spring weather here today and I was able to get my cars out and drive both my 968 and my Cayman back to back.

They are from two completely different eras and the difference between them is such that they cannot really be compared. They are both very balanced and there seems to be a DNA-level Porsche commonality that I cannot describe.

When I hopped into my pickup truck later it felt so dead and lifeless, unresponsive. Like piloting a boat instead of a road vehicle.

I feel exactly the same when I drive my A4, I call it soulless, it’s just a economical tin box for bashing up and down the freeway at 55mpg

Perhaps pointless was a poor choice of words. Of course one is entitled to a choice. What I was trying to say, albeit not well, was that the driving experiences are so different that comparisons are meaningless. One is not necessarily better than another just different. It is the difference that one should enjoy. As drivers we enjoy perhaps one more than another. Mark Twain was reputed to have said about cigars that he never had a bad cigar. He just smoked some that he enjoyed more than others. My Denali is a very nice SUV. It is my tow vehicle nothing more. I don’t look forward to driving it hence I don’t unless I’m towing my car to the track or to Max. The 968 and 997 are two different cars. Each one brings a different feeling and lopsided grin.

If one feels that they have one preference over another that of course this is merely their driving preference. Sometimes as we get more seasoned we get too sensitive.
