959 spotted in Maryland
#1

Yesterday I was going south on I-83 just north of the 695 and I saw a silver 959 stuck in traffic due to an accident. From my view it looked like the real thing but could have been a body kit. My heart nearly skipped a beat when I saw it!

I have seen 2.

1 on display at Barrett Jackson in 2004.

Another at the Brumos museum in 2009. I was there the day after Seinfeld was on a private tour. The place is sick, you are not allowed to take pictures, but you do get to autograph the wall, which says your were there.

For years less than 5 were in the states, but i think now under some show and go ruling, they are entering private collections.

Usually $400k and up.

I saw one of the first 959's in America back in 87 at the Cleveland Auto show. All the Porsches at the show were silver. I will never forget the display. I still have the 2 catalogs/handouts of the '88 model year Porsches and their specs, with the silver cover, that they passed out at that show. I again saw a 959 at Rennsport Reunion III and at the Brumos Porsche Museum. The car still looks amazing to this day.

At Monterey in 2010:

I still think our cars would look good with that recessed area at the back of the hood.

Wait, a convertible 959?

Boy, I sure remember the 959 looking a lot more awesome when it was new. That just looks like a 911 that had sex with a wad of chewing gum.

Yes, it was a cab. I think the plates were from North Carolina. Really didn't care for the looks as a cab.

I'm guessing that car started as a 911 Cabrio and then got a body kit added? I've seen it driving up Rt 28 once or twice. Had to catch up to it to see what it was but since there were no 959 Cabs, I knew it was a wanna be.

I don't mind real kit cars (think Shelby Cobra) but I don't like it when people take a perfectly good car and add junk to it to try and make it something else. I love the 959....it's probably my favorite.....it was way ahead of it's time and is considered by some to be one of the first true "super cars". Got to see a real one at the New Hope, PA auto show a couple of years back.

There is a nice looking silver (replica, I think) in Denver with 'PHOENIX' on the number plate

Saw one live and up close at Laguna Seca last year ( was not racing, just in the paddock area on display ) - IMO, looks way too dated ( you expect one of the Flock of Seagulls band members to step out of it ..) but the thought of its performance gives one goose pimples..enough to make you forgive the way it looks.

I'm beginning to think the one I saw on the road was an actual 959. There seems to be many people in this area that drive their exotic cars regularly. There's a 458 Iltalia I see almost everyday on the road. Rain, snow, salt covered roads, he's out on the highway with it. There's also a Gallardo, AM DB9, and a few Bentleys I see regularly through the winter here. Crazy, but awesome that people actually drive their cars rather than letting them rot in a garage.

Same in this area; some remarkably exotic cars on the roads here and what's even more amazing is that some of them are being driven to work ( just making that assumption because of the commute hours during which I see them ) I see a Veyron a couple of times a week, a Ferrari F40 nearly every weekend, a Vanquish also on the daily commute ( funny, my boss owns one but he only drives his couple of times a month ) , an SLR on occasion...used to see a Carrera GT all the time, but not for a couple of years now.

However, I'd have to say the most surprising of all was a McLaren F1 ( one with a right hand side steering wheel ! ) because I did not think those are " federalized " for US roads , but then if you can afford $ 1 million + for a car you're probably not worried too much about the fee you pay if caught driving it
