First, I did search first, nothing popped out at me...

I'm putting this 968 drivetrain into my 87 944S. Browsing through 944s3.com, he mentioned 968 transaxle had to use 968 torque tube, and 944 transaxle had to use 944 torque tube. My plan this whole time was use the 968 transaxle so I can use the 968 flywheel/bellhousing setup (it came with an aluminum flywheel). But the previous owner said there was a jet engine noise coming from the 968 before we tore it apart, and I don't have a way to get the speedometer to work either yet. So anyways, I freaked out a little. Ran to the garage and mated the 968 torque tube to my 944 transmission that's on ground already. Bellhousing on the 968 stuff is a lot smaller, but the four mounting bolts line up as well as the shafts and splines are the same. So did the guy who did that swap just not know what he's talking about? Yes there will be some big gaps between the bell housings, but what's that going to affect?

no, they do not interchange.



most people go the other way. i've not known anybody who has put the 6 speed into a 944. not even sure it will fit. the rear nose may be a problem.

So what will be wrong? Is the torque tube a different length? The 944 5 speed physically bolts to and lines up with the 968 torque tube...

I wasn't talking parts interchangeability within the transaxles, incase there was confusion there. Is there any issue using a 944 transaxle with a 968 torque tube?

yes. i know they don't bolt up together. not sure why. i think only the S2 torque tube is the same length, and it isn't as strong. as i said, so far i don't know anybody who has gotten the 6 speed into a 944. i'm not sure the 6 speed even fits in there. they pretty much all choose the 951 box.

The transmission and torque tube do bolt together though. The bell housings have different shapes, but in the end, the four bolts all line up as do the shafts. I'll measure the transmissions to make sure the mounting bolts on the top are in the same place.

i do know that guys who put the 968 engine in the car, need to change the bell housing, flywheel, clutch, and torque tube assembly. you'll probably find info on that on the pelican site.

I understand I can run the 944 torque tube but have to switch to an S2 flywheel and bell housing. Or switch to the 968 torque tube and run 968 flywheel and bell housing. I feel confident the 5 speed will work fine with it.

for a 5 speed, yes - 944 tube, flywheel and bell housing.



6 speed - not so sure.



also not sure if the 968 bell housing fits in the 944. that may be why guys run the 944 bell housing.

nope - the 944 tube and the 968 tube are very different. just look at the pics in the PET



pretty sure the 968 bell housing is too deep to fit in the 944 too.



that being said, you can probably get black sea to make you up a tube assembly that can adapt the 968 box to the 944 bell housing, assuming you can fit the 968 box in the 944 at all.



again though, not sure if that's the best way to go, as you would lose your speedo, and it is said that the 951 box is stronger.

you'll need the shift rod, shift lever (shorter), passenger side axle (shorter), and a 968 CV for that shorter axle (since the 968 axles are a larger diameter than the 951)

according to black sea, who does nothing but these things, they are not "interchangeable". in fact, they won't even rebuild the split type tubes anymore, because they fail when applied to a 968 engine and then pushed hard. i went through this when they did mine.



it also seems difficult to believe that they will fit, when the bell housing for the 968 looks so much deeper.



i haven't seen the 3 components side by side, but it seems very odd that porsche would spend so much time and effort to make such major changes in castings, without good reason. that being said, it looks like somebody has done it, based soley on lindsey saying that their gadget is what is needed when putting a 968 trans in a 944. no idea what models it works on, or what else has to be done though.

What's a "split type tube"? I may just keep the 944 transaxle for good and sell the 6 speed, haven't gotten that far yet. But the 5 speed is definitely going back in for now. This is supposed to be my daily driver and I want it back!

Just read where a guy put the engine, tube, and transaxle from a 968 in his 924S. I can't see where Porsche would have changed the firewall sheet metal that much over these three generations of the same body...

like i said, i haven't seen them side by side, but looking at the drawings, they are pretty different. i can't see the reasoning for such huge changes in the castings, unless they needed room for something somewhere. porsche just isn't known for changing things unless they have to. like anything, i'm sure it can be done. just not sure how many changes have to be made.



as for the split type tube, some of the tubes had a split in them at the end. that allows the bearing inside to "walk" under heavy duty. not sure what years have the split.



i would contact black sea. they are the experts on all things torque tube.

The 944S tranny is stronger than a 944 box so I think you should be good there. I am almost sure the 968 TT is shorter than the 944 tube.

again, pelican is probably a better source of info on these kinds of swaps. guys over there rob 968 stuff for their 944 all the time.
