2012 Porsche 968
#1

I have seen spy photo's of the new Porsche 928 and thought what about a new 968 model. So, I decided to put my limited Photoshop skills to work and create a mock-up of the "2012" Porsche 968.

I used Porsche parts (i.e. Carrera GT Headlights, Cayman rear side vents, 997 911 front, etc.) when creating my prototype. This way I would hopefully keep the Porsche theme. I hope you enjoy!

that is some danged nice work

i'd love to see what that looks like with a flying buttress back window (like on a cayman kit i just saw) and no rear wing

and man does that give me an idea - i've just about had it with the splitter on my car, and am seriously considering retrofitting an entire front end like that one

Turn it into a cab and I'm on the waiting list. I wish my Photoshop skills were up to your "limited" ones. Nicely done.

Very nice. Our cars have great lines and it doesn't take much to make them look fresh. The 944 roofline/hatch would have to go.

yeah - i think that is one of the reasons the car is not holding value well - it has a bit of a dated look about it - these days, if the rear hatch opens up, it seems that it pretty much needs to have either a 3rd row of seating or an italian V-12 under it - lol

Flash, just get a hold of an injection mold company and have a new front end created. God, what would that cost? Then it is just a matter of cutting in those headlights......should be done in a month.

ryan - did that - 8k for the mock up and mold

i'm pretty serious about the splitter though - my car is just too danged low - even though i fabbed up some skid plates to help, it still manages to get snagged - just had it reshot for the 4th time - really tired of that

i've been working on getting the one for the turbo since i saw it at parade, but am still waiting for gert to track down the part - i sent him shots a week and a half ago, and have talked to him a few times since then, but so far, no luck

failing that, i might see if i can grab a 996 or 993 front end and modifiy it

I just wanted to thank everyone for the comments. I debated the "whale tail" on the back of the car or not. I would love to see Porsche introduce a new version of the 968. In any event, here is a version without the tail.

This looks like a Ferrari model I saw in a magazine. I can't remember if it was a design exercise or a real car.

Well, I was trying to create something that looked sporty. However, I was not looking at anything else when I created the mock-up. It's funny that it ended up looking similar to several cars. I have always thought that the 968 had some similar features to the Ferrari's (i.e. two door coupe 599 GTB). It would be interesting to have a discussion on "what the new 968 would be like?". I was also hoping it would inspire others to put up there own ideas for a "new porsche 968". Thanks for all of the comments!

Nice! Maybe send it to Porsche and see what they think? hehe <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Maybe update it with a new engine too, a 3.6L V6 or I6, 350HP. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

It'd be nice. I wonder what it would take to get headlights like those on a 968?

I've been enjoying this thread but realized I hadn't posted yet. Great pics! Awesome photoshopping!

Re a new 968, as excited as I would be, I don't see how it would fit in the current range - I mean, the Cayman fills the spot right now, but trades off front engine utility for mid engine performance.

A new 928 I can see, plus it's easy to pull off - Panamera chassis makes a coupe version just a modification. I for one am excited about the new 928 - loads more exciting to me than the Ferrari 599 which I think looks pretty ugly.

I think where a new 968 could work would be a smaller hatchback for the utility aspect, get back to the 924/944 'first Porsche' roots with a moderate engine, low weight, tight chassis and handling, and grins all day long. . . they would have to design a new engine though yes? I mean does a flat-fix even fit in a front engine car? I would think it's too tall.

looks great to me, just as pictured

a small block V8 with around 450 hp would be the right match for that profile.

( by 2012 350hp will be par for Honda Civics , the way things are going.. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> )

and of course, if they can keep it to under ..say.. $75 k .

yeah, that'll happen <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/tongue.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Schweeet pics. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Those headlights just made my '92 seem like a '72! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/ohmy.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

That mod alone brings the car up to date, which says a lot about the design staying fresh. Nice touch, but definately lose the tail....

Someone, anyone, please, make those headlights for real for me and my baby! (...for under $500, plus tax and shipping...)

Sorry folks, crusing some old threads looking for help on wind deflectors for a cab and I am reading some interesting ones....

Revisiting this 2012 968 thread, has anyone ever seen or considered converting the coupe from a hatchback into a 2-seater hardtop? When I look at the light colored coupes and imagine them without the big glass they look very sexy. Would be a supremely challenging mod, but one of a kind from what I can tell.

I was actually exploring the option of converting it to look similar to a real sports coupe's <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/rolleyes.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> hardtop

( as close as possible to the lines of an Aston Martin or a Jaguar roof & rear window ) but not limiting it to a 2-seater as you mentioned, since I wanted to keep the interior cabin as is..

I don't recall anymore what the estimated cost was, but I know that at the time I did not think it was all that prohibitive.. what held me back, and still holds me back to this day is that I have absolutely no confidence that any shop(s) can 1) design and 2) execute the job in a way such as to make the car look like it came off the factory floor that way... in other words, absolutely perfect aesthetically and without the slightest indication this is a modified version of what was a different car.
