Video from Spokane Raceway Park
#21

This weekend? Hmmmm... Monday is a long weekend here, I think I may just make plans to go down there and check out the venue. Sunday sounds doable!

It looks easy enough to find: I5 south, I18 east, and 304th street exit. Cool

BTW: what time is the race at? I'm planning on leaving really early here so I can get to the track at around 8 or so

What kind of speeds are you 968ers getting on the Spokane track's long straight? How fast do you take the curve at the end of the straight?

I was getting to ~6500 rpm in 5th. The speedo was showing well over 140 but according to the gearing it should be about 137mph. The acceleration really tails off towards the end of the straight.

It depends on the situation and how brave you are feeling. If there is no reward for the risk then I brake slightly before turn 1 then hold throttle and brake hard after the bump. If I'm going for it then I try to stay on the throttle and carry 130+ to the brake zone. It is tough because your brain is telling you no. Nothing like a short bumpy brake zone with no reference markers after a really long straight. I think I need a few more days there to really nail it.

I'm running in Group 4. Qualifying is at 9:55 and the race at 2:10.

Harvey, In my mostly stock 968 I hit 130 on the straight and if I get a really good run off turn 10 I can almost squeeze 135 out before a slight brake before turn 1 and butt clencker braking after the bump. Eric, I think the bump is a good braking mark. If you don't start there, big consequences await in turn 2. There used to be a barrel marking the turn in for turn 1, and it was helpful as a marker for braking, etc. and I don't know where it went. I was also able to hit almost 130 in the CRX I was driving and the car's owner would go flat-out through turn 1, but I usually tapped brakes before then. It does take some building up confidence to trust the brakes that much.

Cheers, Stephen

Wow...that's some good timing! I can get 147mph on the straight at Spokane in my '85S 928 but when I shift into 5th gear and it's like I hit a brick wall. My fastest through the first turn after the "dragstrip straightaway" was 120 in the 928 but I'm not doing that again with that heavy of a car (I'm not confident four wheel drifts). I'll leave that to you young guys who still have immortality. I've not had the 968 on the track yet but after watching some videos of 968s running at RPM, I'm getting excited. The sound of any of these cars at speed is awesome. Good luck. Keep us posted on the next runs at Spokane and I'll try to get a cheer team together.

Very nice Eric. I especially like the Mustang drifting farther and farther back in the rear-view!

Yeah! V8 vs I4?

Then again, it could have been a different class, or driver wasn't as skilled. The Corvettes and Camaros at Seattle were FLYING though

Stephen did very well during his Novice races at SRP. I worked station 10 for the Novice group on Friday,

and was pretty impressed with his driving. He just jumped into the FWD Honda, and his lap times were very close to the owners, and Stephen was on older tires

147 is fast going into 1. Try riding with someone who is telling you his wheel bearing is going out on the passenger side as he enters it at 130 plus on street tires . It just happens that it did fail the

next day. One of the local open wheel guys went in there hot not knowing his crew didn't tightened his wheels nuts. Needless to say he knows the top of the hill and the hay bales well. I think the idea of him throwing gravel on the fire he started when landing on them made him check twice the next time.

Good news might be on the Horizon for the track. We had a great presentation at the last Club meeting put on by a consultant for Spokane County. I sure have my fingers crossed for some change.

Stephen, the big orange barrel entering one is still around somewhere. The wind blows it around the track, so we have to search for it .
