19 Pin Diagnostic Socket
#1

Okay, us retired types need something to occupy us on those long Winter nights, unlike you young Bucks with oats to sow!

Does anyone have the 19 Pin Diagnostic Unit Socket (female) from a 968 that may have gone to that big Porsche Parking Lot in the sky???

Or got turned into a racer and the 19 pin is not used and just lying around in the corner of the barn?

Anyhow, if you have one that you can donate to an EXCELLENT cause (to help all remaining 968's!), drop me a note and I will get you an address.

Before I get everyone too excited, I need to get the Socket, with a short length of the wires attached, and do some basic engineering work. MORE LATER!

ummm. . . . I'm excited . . .

Okay... but do you have a 19 Pin Diagnostic Scan Connector to donate to the cause??? You will be even more excited then! ;>))

I don't have one to donate, but I saw on Rennlist that DC Automotive is parting out a cab (total shame )-they may sell you the one from that cheap.

If you're fabbing something, won't you need the male equivilent..?

If I recall when I was researching an airbag re-set circuit, I found the the pins/terminals to be rather exotic.

Good Luck...

Super! I will contact them!

And, Yes, the Male and Female Plugs are Porsche propriatary items, and are "somewhat" difficult to fab up (by design I think!). I understand that AMP Electrical made them for Porsche originally, but Porsche will not let them make any for the Aftermarket... probably a die ownership issue.

In any case, being an old (emphasis on "OLD"!) engineer, I believe there is a way to fab the Male unit from the Female Connector, and do a short production run from modern castable Resins available today. Some hand fabrication required, but how many are we talking about? Maybe 1,500 968's left in the USA? I suppose such a plug would work for the 928GT's and GTS's, but not many of them either... and the 964's, I suppose... well, may have to do more with the casting than originally thought, if the market is there!

From there, it is a relatively short "Leap" to install the correct Harness to cable up to a Laptop, and the necessary software for diagnostics and most importantly, Airbag Resets!!! Of course, you can always cut the wire, but us Purists would rather keep all of the bits as originally delivered!

Actually, the Male Plug is just a convenience item, as the pins can be inserted individually into the Female connector, BUT, if it is doable, why not make it easy as well? Then non engineering types would be more inclined to "Plug and Play", right?

So, On with the Project! I will contact DC and see if I can get the Female Connector... or, barring that, I think I can still buy one directly from Porsche, but why go to ask "Mother" first, right??? More fun to do it the hard way!

there are a couple places round here (Parts Heaven + another) that often have 968 parts. If you don't get luck on rennlist I can check them out.

do 944/951's use the same connector?

I'm ready for the "plug 'n play" option. Go for it!

Yep, fortunately I had some amp pins left-over from my days as an engineer and just pinned directly into the sockets.

Back in the day of the 944 there was an easy way to re-set the airbag by just shorting/grounding some wires in a specific sequence. I researched all the circuitry used from 87 to 92 and there were several changes in that short period of time. Unfortunately for some reason on the 968 they parralleled the a/b circuit with one of the DME circuits, [the CEL circuit?]. And, I'm guessing it may take more then a grounding a logic circuit to reset the a/b module.

Go for it! Gotta love people who are brave enough to fool around with Porsche electronics!

Yes, it does require more than the old "grounding" of the logic circuit as in the later 944's... who can understand the convoluted thinking of German EE's??? In any case, the resetting of a/b warning lights s/b obtainable in the same manner as in the later 928's, 964's and even the early 993's.... plus we can get info on trouble codes that are more meaningful than a bunch of flashing lights!!!

Should know shortly if a Female socket is available for mockup... Then the fun begins! Thanks everyone for the interest! We will get us a "Hammer" derivative yet!

Ah, yes, "If I had a hammer, I'd diagnose in the morning, I'd reset my a/b light all over this land..."

I have actually already tackled this. I have software and electronics for full 968 (and other Porsche) electronics diagnostics including variable monitoring. I have reset my own airbag light several times. I haven't duplicated the diagnostics connector yet although I procured one for development. Ugh, if I could just finish a project.

Hey, that is great news! (that you have done the software part of the project!) I know the feeling on finishing projects... not enough time in this life to do everything!

I may be in touch with you if the other software supplier bombs out on me... once I get the Plug part ready to go, that is!
