As it says in the description, I can't open the link in the DIY on the lower balance shaft cover seal replacement. When I click on it, it just sends me back to the DIY main page. Could somebody please resurrect this link? Thanks.

unfortunately quite some time ago that guy removed the DIY (and 114 posts) before we could catch it and prevent it - he is no longer welcome here - the entire thread has now been removed to prevent further confusion

That's what I was afraid of. He did disappear suddenly, after being a fairly active poster, and he did some really good work to his car; his DIY on the lower balance shaft cover seal replacement was particularly informative, as I recall. Plus, he's as rare as hen's teeth - a 968 owner in Austin. I'll try to make contact with him. Thanks for checking.

I'm hoping that with the oil pan, and all the stuff that has to come off to get to it, off the car, access to the lower balance shaft cover will be extremely good, making what is normally a pretty difficult job relatively easy. I wonder if anyone else has ever done this before, though...

back story - he threw a hissy fit because we asked him to reword something to make it less inflammatory - he didn't like being "edited" so instead he ran away, taking the content of his posts with him - we didn't think about that happening (who over the age of 6 does stuff like that?) - it is now prevented, but not in time to save that DIY

he continues to pick fights elsewhere - i feel no other loss from his absence

So, has anybody attempted the replacement of the lower balance shaft cover seal? It seems to be a fairly common spot for leaks. I replaced the front seals of both balance shafts the last time I replaced the belts, but they weren't leaking a bit - I just replaced them as a cheap preventative measure. The lower balance shaft cover seal is normally quite buried, but to looks to me that once I get the cross-member and the pan off, I should have easy access to it. But I seem to remember others mentioning something about some sort of critical alignment/placement issue asociated with the job. Does it have to do with the rear seal of the lower balance shaft? I'm assuming the shaft has to come completely out to replace the rear seal, and that that is what is difficult about this job. If that's the case, should I also remove the belts (which I'm planning to replace as part of the very large project I've just started on) after I get the oil pan off, allowing me to (hopefully) relatively easily remove the lower balance shaft, replace the shaft seals, and the cover seal?

Sorry for all the questions, but I couldn't find anything about this in either the manual, or on Clark's Garage. Thanks.
