WTB - front "batwing"
#1

Hey Friends,

While backing out of a driveway today, my front end had an encounter with a high curb lip. The driveway lip won, snagged the edge as I backed out, and my *batwing was almost ripped completely off of the car. It's torn up pretty good, dragged on the ground for the 6 mile drive home, and I hope to find a new one, perhaps from someone who has one lying around.

Thanks for a PM if you have what I need.

Yours,

Scott Collins

*Batwing: the first panel underneath the nose of the car that screws into the front bumper cover.

Scott,

Sorry to hear about your mishap. Those things tend to take a beating over the years. Not to sound discouraging, but I'd be pretty surprised if you can find a used one in decent condition, although if you can find one for a reasonable price that's only slightly banged up, they are repairable. Also, the last time I checked, they were still available new, and for less than I would have guessed - somewhere around $300, iirc. Good luck!

I bought a new one from Sunset about 2.5 years ago. Part# 944 505 075 00 (01C) for $265.83, plus about $10 for the miscellaneous screws and mounting hardware (all clearly identified in the PET).

A couple of the mounting points attach to the plastic wheel well liners. If you drive it without the batwing, the airflow will push those liners into the tire and start grinding down those liners (wonder how I know this?). So use some wire or something to temporarily stabilize the liners if you drive it.

hate to sound stupid but what is the batwing?

It is a underbody cover, lives under the front bumper cover. It dislikes high curbs and those stop bars that are sometimes in parking lots. Is important to have in place since it helps airflow over the radiator and helps to stabilize the front bumper cover.

Thanks so much for explaining what part this is and the picture was great. I remember taking this off when I had the front bumper painted. You must be good with computers to ad an arrow to show part. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

Well, let's see, I got my first computer when I was 12 years old: a 3-bit mechanical computer, the clock is a panel that you slide in and out by hand to pulse the "clock". <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/blink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

The first electronic computers I worked on consisted of about 6 refrigerator sized units, required a 20 minute sequence of hitting a few dozen toggle switches to start up, had a full megabyte of core (magnetic) memory if we were lucky (the other 2 had only 128K), and were fully programmable via decks of cards. All in assembly language -- when programmers were real men! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

monstrous - the 951 is about 2" wider at the bottom than the 968, and hence the piece will not fit

syncro - that was the hotrod - the first computer i worked on was a data general that had a whopping 32k of capacity - teletype entry - papertape compiler - ran in basic

Sort of back off topic - 968Syncro - We must be the same age, I started with 4-bit, toggle switches and a marvelous invention called paper tape. Beat the hell out of toggle switches to clock in assembler code. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" /> Apple IIe, now that was much later in life, ahh I miss Pascal.

Can't you just make a batwing out of plywood and paint it? 1/2" thickness should be fine, more stable and durable than the plastic.

not really - once wet, the plywood becomes a mess - also, it is far less resilient to impact

now, a sheet of abs from home depot would work pretty well

To add an arrow or other annotation to an image:

- I use PowerPoint (other presentation SW should do the same thing)

- Insert the image (JPG, GIF, PNG, whatever) into PowerPoint.

- Add arrows or whatever else for example text annotations, a highlighting circle, etc.

- "Save As..." select file type .JPG (it prompts you if you would like the current or all slides).

The source image from the PET was simply a screen capture (CTRL ALT PRT SCREEN for Windows, Mac will have the same). The problem is how to get one page, or some subset of the PET .PDF file into some other format like an image file. I've used Photoshop Elements to do this sometimes if I want the full page. It loads a full .PDF file and then lets you select which page you'd like to manipulate.

Dave, I also miss Pascal, what an easy environment to get things done very, very quickly.

A thousand apologies and mea culpa's for keeping this off topic, but I have a Mac keyboard that I inherited from my daughter that I use with my Windows computer. Does anybody know which key on a Mac keyboard serves as the print screen key on a Windows keyboard? I always thought you needed screen capture software such as Snag-It to do screen captures - shows you how much I know... Thanks.

Adding arrows is much easier on a Mac. <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/laugh.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

1.Open the parts catalog PDF in preview.

2. Click select and make a window around the page or diagram you want to use

3.Copy it

4. In preview menu, go to File->New from clipboard

5.Click annotate and modify any way you wish (arrows, lassos, text box, highlighter)

6. File---> Save as in any format you want!
