WANTED: 17" 968 Factory Rims
#1

I'm looking for a set of 17" factory rims (Cup 1's) as found on model years 1992, 1993, and early 1994. Prefer a low mileage set, as close to perfect, with original paint finish. OR if you don't have a full set, let me know what you have, as long as they are in excellent condition.

I can also do a trade, if you prefer, with an almost perfect set of 17" Cup 2's (late 1994 and 1995.) The rears are perfect, but 1 front has 1 or 2 very, very slight scratches, and the other has a 2 inch small curb scrape.

Thanks,

Jay

just a note:

according to Wheel Enhancement, the accepted authority on these wheels, the early (flat spoke type) wheels are not "Cup 1", but rather "C2T" (or C2Turbo)

the later more rounded spoke type are not "Cup 2" but merely "Cup"

i'm not sure where the Cup 1/Cup 2 thing originated, but i got spanked hard on Rennlist for making that mistake

you should have no problem finding a home for the Cup rims - they are much lighter than the C2T rims, and very much in demand

agreed - just trying to help you find what you want - i got spanked pretty good for using the wrong terminology in the wrong crowd and thought i'd pass it along

seriously though - you should have no trouble, and come out on top - the later wheels are valued higher and harder to come by - yours sound easily repaired - i'll keep my eyes open - are you considering replicas?

2zeroes,

I have a set of 17" cup I's (C2 Turbo's, Bob) setting in my garage. They are made by Borbet and have never been used; not a scratch on them. If you are interested, email me at wmbyers@aol.com.

The Cup I, Cup II could be nicknames. Most people know what these mean anyway, so lets accept both terms as valid. We are a little more flexible here than Rennlist. No need to pay the spanking forward.

well, after poking around a bit, i find that wheel enhancement, and the guys on rennlist seem to be right - why perpetuate an incorrect name? why not educate rather than perpetuate?

As long as no "spanking" is taking place, and educating others is civil, I agree it should be mentioned for the benefit of the group. I learned the misinformation of Cup I and Cup II on 968 net, and I hope to care enough one day to correct my own knowledge <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/smile.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

yup - that was the intent - for the record, i wasn't doing any spanking - i just thought it might be easier to sell them if the real name was used, since most people use that, and it would probaby increase the number of people who therefore might be interested - i know it ws helpful when i sold mine - i ended up using both names in the listings

a lot of the guys on .net use the other name (which is where i picked up the misinformation too) - they like to give things odd arbitrary names over there (bat wing, cheesehead, etc) - i, like most people tend to prefer the proper name, so as to avoid an explanation later

no worries - i'll keep my eyes peeled anyway

Between my family and my family in law, we have owned just about every single Porsche in history. I have always been told and had the wheels afore mentioned called Cup1's or just Cup wheels. The second set of late 94+ were called Cup2's. Here is my thinking, which spawns from many very informed Porsche enthusiasts-

We have a 1992 Porsche Cup car, essentially a Euro RS. The car came with 17X7/8 Cup 1's(I am pretty sure this is right). While trying to set up the car for our track, we decided to opt for a larger rear tire/wheel. We began looking for 17X9 Cup1 wheels, which just so happened to also be a factory wheel for the Cup car. So now we have four 17X7's, four 17X8's, and four 17X9's. We had a 1991 Guards Turbo before we found the 17X9's and thought for kicks and giggles we would see if they would bolt up...the rears off the C2T. While they bolted up, we found them to stick out a bit more than expected on the narrow body. After further investigating, the offsets are actually different making two sets of wheels, Cup wheels and C2 Turbo wheels. This can be further distinguished by one car with had with so called 'forged magnesium' Cup wheels. I can't verify this, but it was on a 1992 964 C4 narrow body race car, factory rally car. It was at RPM motorsports in Houston with Ray Joseph forsale, but not sure if it is anymore. Basically I have concluded in my research that there are two wheels, Cup's and C2 Turbo's. What fits the 968 is beyond me, but I have had experience with the 964.

I also believe when we ordered the narrow body 17X9's from Porsche GMBh, they were referred to as Cup's. Just incase anyone wants new wheels, I believe the 17X9's were about $800 each after shipping from Germany.

FWIW, my 92 964 Euro Cup has original 17" wheels, 8Jx17's in the front and 9.5Jx17 (very hard to find and $$ if you do) in the rear:

Officially from Porsche, these are simply called "Rim" and have a 965 series part number

The 95 968 Cab has OEM 17's:

Most people call the first one Cup 1's or C2 Turbo wheels, the latter are almost always called Cup 2's.

The person who would likely know the history and origin of the terminology is Adrian Streather.

Hmm, our 92' Cup car definantly isn't that setup. When we got it it had 7/8's. The C2T wheels did not fit on the body.

I notice you also have a 94' RS America. My father in law has a 94 Polar/Black with 1022 miles on it. I am attaching a picture. Its not very good, but you can see it. Black HRE's, HR Coilovers, and a few more things. To the right of the F40 is a 73' RS restored with 8000 original miles. Long sold thoughSad, great car.
