Sources for maintence parts - SF East Bay?
#1

Where are people buying their normal maintenance parts like oil and air filters?  In the San Francisco east bay I used to run over to Easy Porsche in Emeryville or Parts Heaven in Hayward.  Since both of those places don't exist anymore, other than the dealer does anybody else know of (1) a local source (prefer somewhere in the northern section of the east bay anywhere north of Hayward/Pleasanton area), or (2) a mail order source they use and recommend.

Of course I looked at Amazon but can't really find a Mahle at a decent price.  Pelican Parts and/or Sunset Porsche are possible mail order sources, but I really miss not being able to grab the ordinary maintenance items from a local shop because I decided to wake up and get the oil changed that day.  And shipping on small orders is not reasonable.  Sunset wants $20 shipping for oil + air filters.  So I'll just pay up at the local Porsche dealer unless there's other sources out there.  I guess I could start checking the O'Reilly's and Autozone websites.  Sometimes I'm surprised by what I can order there.

If there's an existing post on this topic, please point to it.  Thanks!

If you have a local Porsche main dealer, you can buy a 968 service kit

Oil filter

Air filter

Fuel filter

Plugs

Oil drain plug washer

Its about £60 here, so $80 ish, I will find a part number

Think this is it 94410093006

I feel your pain about those places closing, but Parts Heaven was usually way overpriced anyway. Once you've owned Porsche's long enough, it becomes unrealistic to think local parts stores will have parts available. This is particularly true when it comes to the 968 because there were so few produced. For those Parts shared with other Porsches (i.e the 944), some parts may be available, but these will disappear too.

The suggestion is to create your own stockpile (OK, hoard) of parts for the 968.

Try: AASE, Design 911, Rock Auto, Pelican, Auto Atlanta, FCP Euro, Aircooled Net (VWs, air-cooled Porsches, and some water-pumpers), Summit Racing, Sierra Madre, Cogs Cogs, etc.

None of which I know even on this side of the bay either …but I’ll ask my friend who tinkers with cars all the time and has two 968s and one 944.  He’s out of town until next week so I’ll ask him when he comes back ..

I sent him a text - here’s the response .

Nothing on the Peninsula either .  Or San Jose, that I know of .   And right now the supply chain issues have  affected car parts as well .   I have seen 968 oil filters become scarce and expensive. Mahle ones were $8, now they're NLA and a Hengst is $13!

I highly recommend.    www.autohausAZ.com

Stp oil filter $13
Air filter $19
DME relay $14-33
Shipping is $9 flat

Or    www.rockauto.com   - their prices are lower but shipping is higher. Sometimes it ends up cheaper.

The problem is I exhausted my stockpile of filters that I've had for a few years.  I've got plenty of Mobil1 so I'm not really looking for a kit.

Has anybody used the the STP6941?  Autozone has it for $6 so I'm somewhat skeptical about that one.  They also have a spin-on filter from K&N HP-4001 which seems to be available at quite a few places including Amazon.  I remember checking RockAuto and the oil filter  selection was very sparse.  Air filters seems to be easier to find at most places.  For Mahle filters, I'm hoping it's just a hiccup in the supply chain that will revert back to normal in 6 months.

Since I've always used Mahle on this car I'm cautious about other brands.  I know, it's just an oil filter and I should convert to a cartridge style as many others have done.  I've been more relaxed on using non-OEM brands with my other cars (Toyota) for several hundred thousand of miles, so I just need to move on.  And I'll check in with some east bay and marin P-car repair shops.  There used to be one or two that serviced 944/968.

Check in with ABP Repair in Oakland. I took my 944 and 968 there for 30years before we moved out of the area. I have been able to order parts through them. Very knowledgeable first class work. They know 924s, 944s, 968s, and 928s.

Good to know about ABP for repairs, which I'm occasionally looking for.  I called them this morning and unfortunately they don't normally stock 968 oil filters and they just call their parts jobber when they do need one.  They said there seems to be a supply chain issue with Mahle right now but they can get Hengst, which I know seems to be easily available at most P-car supply houses.  I guess I gotta take what I can get unless I want to pay up at a dealer for a Mahle in a porsche box.  I'll have to stock up on Mahle again when the ship comes in.
