window tinting
#1

Hello, members.

I'm considering tinting the windows of my '95 for several reasons. With the quality of products on the market today, I am too not concerned about the colour or cost. What I am curious about though is how difficult the procedure would be for the rear hatch glass. Is the film one piece or does it need to be several pieces because of the curvature? Knowing that the black edging over time on many 968s becomes brittle and flaky, is there an adhesion issue or does the film keep it securely in place? Your opinions are much appreciated.

Thanks and happy motoring.

If you search here you will find most people had unsatisfactory results or the tech doing it had one B'atch of a time on the curve.

My car was purchased new in Arizona by the PO and she tinted the windows. When I got it I had the tinting removed because it was too dark for California and therefore illegal. The tinting distorted the view through the rear hatch to the point where I considered it to be a safety hazard. The tint on my hatch was applied in strips. The defrosting wires are applied to the inside of the hatch so you have to cutting the tinting material to fit between the defrost wires. Very time consuming to remove and I would imagine time consuming to install and no doubt complicated by the curvature of the hatch glass.

I have a 50% tint on all windows and rear hatch and it cuts down significantly on heat in the summer, as well as protects the interior to some degree from sun damage. At 50% you can hardly tell from the outside that the windows are tinted, which was exactly what I was looking for. I think that is a more classy look.

Rear hatch is one piece. Tint film gets thinner as it gets more translucent. The shop I used would not apply anything lighter than 50%. Problem with rear hatch is that you need to be careful when closing it, as you can easily put a permanent smudge mark on the tint if there is contact between an item you are carrying and the hatch glass.

Ask around and find a good shop. The one I used was well-known and experienced.
