Sick of being sick
#1

I caught some sort of bug right around thanksgiving. on Nov the 24th it was at its peak and I was bedridden. My symptoms were major coughing, I mean it hurt to cough. Runny nose and sneezing and a back ache. Managed to pull myself together and travel down south to visit friends for that weekend. By Sunday I seemed to be getting back to my old self. However the cough and runny nose didnt completely go away.

So here I am now, Dec 17th and I still have this runny nose and cough. I rarely get sick and when I do its never more then a week. So what up with this? Old age, a new virus immune to my shots of nite quil

So I'm soliciting recommendations for over the counter stuff before I go see a Doc.

i had a horrible bug not long ago - it had been seriously about 30 years since i had been down for more than a few hours, and this one laid me out for 4 days

if you are running a fever, then you need to stay in bed - period - while you are certainly free to consult your doctor, i'm pretty sure he won't be able to do much regardless of whether or not it is flu or a cold - once you've got it, you've got it - as long as it isn't pneumonia or something, then it's really just about bed rest, fluids and aspirin

the cough is a drag, and you can get something for that at the local drug store

If your cough is dry, unproductive in the sense that your not coughing anything up and you are still having the back pain it could easily be pneumonia. I'd go see the Doc. Been there, done that.

BTW, I believe the only active ingredient in Nyquil is the alcohol. I'd opt for some nice 12 year old McCallam single malt scotch, especially the one that is aged in Jerez Sherry barrels. Tastes soooo much better than NyQuil.

Coughing up the thick yellow stuff in the AM. no more back pain. Runny nose is awful until about 11:00. Im not a go to the Doc kinda guy. Im 38 and hardly ever get sick for more then 2 days. This has been over 3 weeks and is a first for me. Just getting a feel for if anyone else was suffering with similar symptoms.

A co-worker recommend Buckleys cough syrup.

same symptoms i had - when i finally convinced myself to stay down for 2 days in a row, it was pretty much gone - took about 3 days to clear all the phlegm though

More than likely an upper respiratory infection of some sorts. If you're coughing up phlegm, chances are it is post-nasal drip brought about by the URI. Lotsa stuff coming up in the morning, then you've coughed it all up by noon - only to have it build up again overnight while you are prone. If you have no fever, that is good as that means it is not the flu. If your breathing is OK (not labored, or heavy chested) that is also good.

No matter what, plenty of fluids (not alcohol, BTW! ) and plenty of rest.

If you go to the Dr, they will probably give you a 7 or 10 day course of antibiotic which will most likely clear out the infection if that is what you have (as long as it is bacterial). It would also be good to go to eliminate things like pneumonia, bronchitis, or other lower respiratory issues. They will make sure your breathing is fine and have a look-see in your ears for signs of sinus infections. If you have a viral infection other than the flu, such as a cold, not much else can be done beside the aforementioned rest, fluids, and perhaps OTC medicines to help ease symptoms - Tylenol Severe Sinus Day/Night, NyQuil, etc. My doctor also suggested Claritin or Zyrtec to help clear up the post-nasal stuff a bit.

I've been fighting a cough/post-nasal drip/miserableness/etc. since before Halloween..... I've got one day of antibiotic left and I still feel less than 85%. The part that stinks is I haven't really been able to rest since I am working on a house project and busting my hump during spare time. Factor in kids, work, other daily duties, and so forth, and I haven't had any time to get 2-3 days of bed rest to kick the bug.

I am not a doctor so please take care of yourself - I am merely passing along a bit of info and make no claims therein.

Dammit Jim your a doctor not a ...

Thanx for that. To You and Flash. Since Hallows eve huh? That's a long time. Sounds like we share the same virus.

I also have no time for rest. Havent all year. Bathroom remodel in full swing, me and a friend. The landcruiser needs the power steering line replaced. A side business with a friend that were getting off the ground. and my typical family and work schedules. Very very busy.

I also went about the shower wrong the first time so I had to tear out all the green board and install durock. Then re-do the bench with some professional help. Projedct was really dragging until Al came into the picture to help me.

A few pics of my master bath prj.

Ill try and get a few hours of rest today.

Should I cut out coffee? It dehydrates.

Remodels are always fun!!! I was anticipating some decent rest today due to the supposed snow storm, but we only have a dusting right now and no visible snow fall! WTF? I even got the sled out so the girls and I could have some fun. I expected to see 3-4" on the ground by now. Must be a slow moving storm- and I guess we'll get a fair amount of accumulation later today/tonight and into tomorrow.

As for fluids, water is the best! OJ is good too for the vitamin C content which supposedly helps with colds and such.

Coffee, soda, alcohol, etc. - not so good. (I had two glasses of wine last night... )

Dam-it Jim your Doctor, you should be setting the example.

Here in the DC metro area we're getting hammered. Id say were up to 8-10" and it will not stop until Sunday. Forecast warns the worst will be here around 4:00.

No worries though as I love the snow. SO peaceful. I have a cord of fire wood, 2 sleds and plenty of coco. I also have the new Star trek on Blu-Ray.

Awesome!

Heading to upstate NY in late January to go snowmobiling with some friends. Did it last year for the first time and had a blast! Looking forward to snow this year- the girls had too much fun sledding last year. Bad part was there were only two days for sledding!!

Let me know how Star Trek is... It's on my BluRay list for sure. Watched Terminator Salvation earlier this week- OK, not great. The fake Arnold really ruined it for me.

I anticipate another glass or two of wine this evening or perhaps a Boddingtons- we'll see!

How am I ever going to get my winery going if you guys back east don't drink more wine? It is good for you, even contains vitamin C , plus a whole of host of anti-oxidants. About the only thing we don't consume with wine out here in California is corn flakes.

Seriously, hope you are all feeling better very soon.

We typically go to Seven Springs every year. Snow boarding (Im getting too old for that) Snow tubing, and as of the last 3 years snowmobiling. Towards the end of the tour the guides split up the group and take a fast route and a slow route. Lots of fun. Wiggle while full throttle enough and you can actually get the back end loose and drift.

Let me know how Star Trek is... I caught it twice in the theater on "Imax" easily the best movie I've seen all year.

PS. The snow should be heading your way. Pa isnt that far.

Rhude,

I found that Mucinex really works well to clear the crap from your lungs. Take 2 and drink as much water as possible in a 30 minute period (I mean A LOT!). I have found that it really helps.

Feel better soon,

Jay

i hear nothing but great reviews of mucinex - never tried it, but everybody i know who ha says it works great

i subscribe to the vitamin c in the wine philosophy - i wasn't drinking a lot, and that's why i think i got sick - seriously though vitamin c is an excellent preventative measure, though it will do nothing for you once you are sick

we screened star trek here on the 134" ginormous screen with the full surround thing going - VERY COOL - enjoyed the movie
