Who will have us...?
#1

So, there I was driving down around town the other day in the 968 when a beautiful Guard's red 944 turbo pulls up behind me at a stop light. It was very clean and I was admiring it (I have always loved the front end on the car). So, I see the driver and passenger motioning at my car and talking. As we move along down the road, the 944 is trying to get by me and finally makes a good lane change to the right lane. As we approach an intersection, he finally pulls along side of me. I was hoping to do the mutual "Nice car" or thumbs up but the guy never looks over and turns right at the light. I was a little let down.

My point is that since the 911 folks don't know we exist, the 928 folks think of us as a toddler or a lesser version of their car due to some common styling cues, the 944 folks seem to shun us for some reason (jealousy?), who will have us? I kind of feel like an orphan and this forum is our orphanage...

i find it odd too - sour grapes i think - not sure - i have seen that before though - i'm not sure that many of those guys know what a 968 is

we'll probably bump into a few of them though on the 1st at the coffee and cars portion

I have been to a few PCA events where mine was the only 968. I didn't get much attention until the Carrera guy came over at the 1/2 way stop point to check out the car that passed him so "briskly"...that got some interest. The same day RS Barn got a new 944 customer, who later bought a 968 for club racing. The decals don't just make it go faster.

I was really happy when, on a similar event, a guy with a brand new Turbo Cab made a point to come over and say, "Nice car!"...I offered to trade (so that I could sell his car and buy 6 nice 968s of course ).

I still waive at all 944s and all 928s, though I must admit I do not do the same for 924s. But I do not even acknowlege most 911s.. ( exception on GT2 or 3s , maybe the 993s and/or the 996 turbos ).. I think of all those run-of-the-mill 911s as the lesser member of the family, which I'm sure is a mutual sentiment when they look at my car.. to each his own I suppose.

I think that sometimes the other Porsche driver is simply clueless. This guy can not be found at any discussion forum, and I am stereotyping for sure, but probably doesn't know a swizzle stick from a dipstick. I pulled up next to a mint, and I mean MINT, '83 944, and stared at him for the entire time the light was red. I couldn't believe he did not recognize that I was next to him. He should have felt honored that my 968 was there. Maybe I should have gotten out a neon sign, but if he did not get it, nothing I could do for him. Or, maybe, he felt threatened.. I would have taught him a lesson when the light turned green, but I used to drive a 944, so out of respect for the car, I did not suck the headlights out of his front end.

You would think anyone driving a Porsche would simple "feel" another Porsche anywhere in the vicinity and nod, look, high-five, or something. It's like the kid in the movie, Sixth Sense. "I see Porsches". I guess that there is nothing common about common courtesy. If it was common, everyone would do it.

I wave alot. And I've noticed that in my 968, I've gotten most responses from other 968s (in part because there are only a few in my neighborhood). In my 944na, I've gotten most responses from other 944na. In my 944turbo, I've gotten most responses from other 944turbo's (or S2).

I think the culture of Porsche's waving to other Porsche's is pretty much dead. And the response I'm getting is, 'hey we have identical car' response.

Motorcycle riders still have a good culture of waving to each other. When I was riding actively, people would even wave across freeway dividers (unless a Harley Davidson was involved.).

Interesting comments. In my opinion, a nice car is a nice car. Whether it's a P-car, nice Corvette, 911 Turbo, I don't care. I'll check out the car and acknowledge the driver if he looks my way. It's kind of a mutual respect thing. But Scott is right, if they don't get it or aren't aware of who's around them, there isn't anything you can do.

However, in my case, I know he saw my car, knew what it was and was talking with his buddy about it. I watched it all from my rear view mirrorSmile

About two months ago I waived at a 968 Cab here in San Jose (we were both going through a 4-way stop)... no reaction.

T-Bone et al.,

I totally agree with this and have acknowledged all types of cars, from classic Chryslers to new Ferraris and Porsches. Heck, the other day I gave the nod to a guy driving a Datsun 240Z, just because I always thought that car was cool and because I can appreciate that he must have a passion to put up with it and keep it on the road. It's a credit to car enthusiasts, just the passion alone, regardless of the make and model, right?

Funny thing. I have only got that once and it was form another 968 owner. I chase this guy down and complemented his car. the convo went like this.

Me- Nice color, Amazon green right
Him- yeah.
Me- Are you on the forums?
Him- What?
me- There's a good forum on the web, 968 forums. A lot of good advise on these cars. You should check it out.
him- oh. (And He just kinda starred at me).

Most 944 guys I see are younger and dying to talk cars. Boxsters and 911s often give the double light flash while passing. Seems to be good comradely out here in MD.

I'm still from the old Porsche school of flashing lights at other Porsches. I find that Porsches driven by women do not respond. I don't mean to sound sexist but I don't think they are "into" the cars and just have one to impress their friends. Around here (DC area) there are a lot of Porsches so I flash away and sometimes get a flash back or a wave. Yesterday at the Home Depot a guy loading my car said " great looking car". AAAH It always makes me proud of my 968.

As for women and Porsches, here's one...

I'm driving down Princeton-Hightstown Rd., and this young woman in a pickup keeps trying to overtake me from the right. Every time I pull away, she gets back to me, and finally catches me at a light. I know a stalker when I see one, but this is a bit different. Still, she has to know she has no chance... But she is gesturing and I turn off the music and roll down the window and she says, "Hey, my husband has the same car!!" She was so excited and we pulled into a lot and had a chat, exchanging phone numbers - so I could be in touch with her husband . settle down everyone.... It turns out that she knew exactly what car I have and understood how rare it is. I was definately impressed! (I'm thinking, how rare is this, a woman, very nice looking, not criminally insane, knows what a 968 is, and actually flags me down to help make a 968 connection?)

3 years later - present day - my buddy has 2 968's now and is single and busy as ever. Two out of three ain't bad!

Wow, if some woman flagged me down, I would certainly think it was the car and not me. Then again maybe she noticed my gray hair and just digs "older" men or maybe is it older cars.

Wow! I think that last part is far more true of men than women. Most women I know aren't looking at their car as a status symbol they drive what they want to drive and yes are generally not into cars. My wife loves her 968 and she might wave at you but you won't get a headlight flash (of any kind)

I've met a few woman that were into cars but never on the same level as car guys. I.E. My current co-worker, she can spot a Ferrari, Lambo, older Mustang etc but she can't talk engines and when I say "Its like a 599 or GTR" I loose her. I get into the mode as I'm talking with one of my buddys then I see the puzzled look on her face and I start explaining what I meant by LSD.

It's still nice talking with a girl that loves cars though.

My wife can't really tell you much about the 968 but she had a short shift installed first week she owned it and wanted the exhaust and chip when RSBarn opened up for business. She's not going to go sit around and talk about cars but she likes to drive it.
