Which is the right paint code?
#1

I have a '92/93 Midnight Blue Coupe and I need to paint the new front splitter.

The question is, is it Midnight Blue Pearl, code 37W or Midnight Blue Metallic, code 37C.

I can't find anything on the car to identify the right code (nothing in the boot or under the bonnet) and it being a Japanese import doesn't help.

Can anyone help me with this?

Having looked on another paint match site I'm seeing 39C for midnight blue metallic, but this is for 1993 models.

I think 37W is correct for the pearlescent, however a further search for 37W also comes up as Nacht Blau and my mistake, 37c is Tahoe blue (probably!)

Now I'm more confused than ever!

there are definitely different Midnight Blue Metallics. for example, they changed from early 94 to late 94. you wouldn't notice it unless you had them side by side. the early color tends to reflect more of the green light, and the later color more of the purple.

the paint sticker should be right next to the fuse box.

my early 94 (4/93 mfg date) is 39C

Thanks Flash, I think 39C is what I'll go for.

Unfortunately there is no sign of the paint sticker, although after 20 years thats no surprise.

I have a '93 and the code is L37W, they changed the code for '94 so Bob's car is probably a slightly different shade than the 92/93 years.

So perhaps mine is pearlescent and not metallic?

The L apparently is just "lacquer"

So, having spent a little time chasing around paint suppliers I have been told the following.

37W is the correct paint for models '91 to '93

39C is '93 onwards.

Apparently the difference is minimal with 39C containing slightly more Mica, but not so much as would be obvious for the job I'm doing.

Cans should arrive tomorrow,so it will be interesting to see how close the match is.

For info the US site PaintScratch give 37W/F8 for '92 and both this and 39C for 1993 onwards.

Although it can't be relied on, the small colour swatch on the site shows 37W to be quite a bit darker than 39C.

there's a 3rd one for later cars too. i was pretty surprised at how different it was from mine.

i also just had some new paint made, and it was even different from mine. of course the new paint is water based, and what is on my car now is not.

I have no doubt that when the paint arrives today that although it's the right code it won't match and I'll end up ordering the other code.

Probably should have ordered the 2 (or even 3) shades at the same time, so at least I could have got on with the job.
