Where's the amp????
#1

Specifically the roof antenna amp on a coupe.

Based on Sheet 9 (position P 82) of the wiring diagrams, I assumed that the amp was near the antenna.

I have a terribly weak signal and want to check for a bad connection on the amp.

I took off the headliner piece at the back where the antenna is. In the picture you can see the antenna connection, which was tight, and the plastic connector for the amp, which was also properly plugged in. However, no amp. I traced the wire back without removing any further headliner and found nothing.

Has anyone actually seen the couple amplifier that can help me out?

And yes I have checked the connector at the radio end. I want to find the amp itself!

EDIT: Sorry for the double post. Webmaster, can you take the other one out? Thanks

i hear that the amp in a hardtop is supposed to be up by the antenna, and not down where the cab unit is. never verified that though

Definitely not by the antenna. Good idea to check for power. I'll take the headliner piece off again and check.

Not by the antenna, but it must be in the antenna base. That is the part outside the car that the antenna screws into. I measure on mine approx. 1 to 2 volts coming from the radio going to this antenna base. I have no idea what it should be, but the results I have are quite pathetic.

I did find one strange thing. If I connected myself to the end of the amp power lead coming from the radio, the reception improved considerably. Kind of like holding the old rabbit ears on a TV to improve the picture (this image will only make sense to the older members of this forum <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/biggrin.png" class="smilie" alt="" /> .

Not sure what to do next, but I would like to listen to my radio.

well, that makes sense, since i remember it being said that it was at the base.

it should be 12v coming from the radio to the antenna amp. sounds like you need to check the supply wire behind the radio. if you have 12v at that wire, then run a new wire to the antenna.
