GT driver acknowledges the 968
#1

The Carrera GT "neighbor" , whose car I see at least once a week, waved ( and he initiated it ! ) at my 968 as the cars crossed. In that most of the time the 968 is behind his GT , not sure he had too many opportunities to notice my car before, and furthermore why would he care about something which costs less than one of his sunroof panels , but IMO, this gesture shows a lot of class and appreciation for the 968. So this is probably not just some get super rich overnight dude who bought his first "PORSH" , but likely a porschephile.

Wonder if he waves at Boxsters. I bet not ( besides, he'd tire quickly having to wave at one out every four cars on the road )

Interesting Dan. So you think a GT "trumps" a 968. Perhaps the other guy thought the reverse.....

But of course..

And furthermore, on those days where I follow the CT to the same highway exit we always take to our respective homes ( though I think he might live in a slightly bigger house than I do.. ) all I can say is : lucky for him he did not try to pull away from me, now that I have the speed-6 racer X chip in the 968 !

On the other hand, I was stopped at a light this weekend next to a Lexus SC430, middle aged looking gentleman with a little hottie next to him (she should have been in my car) as he peers over at me and says, not bad. Respectively I simply said thanks. His next statement is what made me hot "wasn't that the Porsche mistake? That was their slowest car ever." that's when I turned my music back up and reminded him he was driving a SUV weight compact car. So we pull away from the light briskly, I make sure to stay ahead of him as his transmission seems to struggle getting to 2nd gear(maybe he was trying to manually shift the pig). as we approach the freeway on ramp (Hazel ave onto 50 towards Tahoe) I pulled about 3-4 car lengths on him as he struggled to keep nearly 4000 lbs of vehicle on the road. now shouldn't a 300hp 325lb-ft car be able to toast are little 4cyl N\A sleds? Either way while the SC is a great car and I have spent some time driving one he has no reason to look down upon any car ever produced by Porsche. The nerve of some people he can keep thinking what he wants about the 968. I've had a gentleman at a stop light in a Bentley ask me what year my car was.

got a very cool thumbs up today from a 993 today - we were side by side on the freeway (10) and we rolled from 3rd gear at about 70 on up through to 130 - i was WAY ahead of him at that point - i backed off to make my exit - after catching up and coming back up alongside, he looked over to me, rather stunned, smiled, gave me the big thumbs up, and i exited rather pleased with my red-headed stepchild

OK.....I can't help but chime in...I've had some of the other goodies that...I guess people probably think I should be a slob about (i.e. 911 Turbo, supercup race car). Not to sound like an ass but it was not the big deal that people make of it.

In Atlanta, people drive a Benz like it's a Beetle. I forget that people actually wander what it's like to have...bla,bla...bla bla...bla, bla.

Before I bought my 968....Can't really say I frowned at them...just never really noticed them. Maybe that's why people who have some of the more affordable Porsches tend to have a napolean complex.

I've got to admit...I never really fit in with people that idled anything too much...I guess that's why I'm stupid enough to put relatively expensive stuff in harms way, knowing full well I may not take it back home.

In fact...I gotta tell you...The 968 has peaked my interest far beyond the Turbo and the Cup Car. I find my self saying...I can't believe this car can do bla, bla...bla, bla...bla, bla.

In short, don't ever sell your 968. I believe that in 20 - 30 years, these cars will be looked at as one of Porsches highest ranking classics.

And for you guys that have not attempted to see where your car ranks in actual track performance.. With proper driver training these cars will flat beat anything on the track...I do mean anything.

So the next time you are out driving your 968...Do like I do, Flash your lights at that 911...I guarantee you, he'll Flash you back. And don't be afraid to stick your chest out with pride...More people know just how great these cars are than you might think....That's why Porsche is making the 968 replacement...I believe they call it a CAYMAN. Check it out at a local track near you.

Commentary, Charles Geer.

Not bad?! Not bad!?

For the record, I would take one 968 over ten Lexus SC430s any day! Although Japanese reliability is second to none, I look at them as being just a big bunch of copycats.

Your post really got me fired up... The guy called it slow? First of all, he needs to realize that Porsche has always been so much more than going fast. Secondly, the 968 is not slow! It is faster than about 97% of all cars on the road. Yes, Porsche cars are generally quite fast, but that's not the point! The point is to create automotive finery that is so much more than the sum of its parts... something that keeps a permanent grin on its owner's face... something that causes the owner to look back at his car admiringly every time he has to walk away from it.

That said, since the guy was talking power and speed, it is likely he would have berated my 944 Turbos, as well. I would gladly take on this guy in my fully stock 1989 951 and win handily. (From the factory, it was rated at 5.5 seconds from 0-60 and 13.5 seconds in the quarter mile, so I think it is safe to say that he would get blown off the road.) Now if he were to challenge my heavily-modified 951, the "Red Rocket" as I affectionately call her, he would be annihilated! (A guy I know whose 951 makes less horsepower and carries more weight consistently gets 4.1 second 0-60 readings, so I feel quite confident that the poor SC430 owner would be left in the dust, muttering to himself, "Not bad...")

Phew, I can't believe how upset your post made me... Shame on me for getting so defensive, but that is just how much I love the 944 series of cars!
