#1

I came across this interesting old thread today while looking for other things. VW owners seem to love this car.

Funny, I found that thread whilst doing a google also. My favorite quote from that page

"what you need to know:

they have the beefiest stump-pulling 3 litre 4 cylinder you could ever imagine.

the NA cars feel faster than turbo cars from other companies.

they handle like they're glued to the pavement.

the interior is just amazing.

they also feature the most addictive 6-speed tranny you could ever shift.

they're freaking gorgeous "

VW guys tend to respect their relationship to porsche.

I love my 968 for what it is & don't hate it for what it isn't!

forget what VW owners have to say about the 968, someone posted these stats ( looks like something from Wikipedia ? ) for the 968 on a Ferrari forum. I was just checking to see what people may say about the 599 Fiorano, one of our company's senior executives is considering leasing one and we were talking cars so I thought I'd investigate the 599 a bit to see if I can dig up any dirt on it and give him a hard time.. but based on what I'm reding about our N/A 968, not the turbo mind you, here looks like I have nothing to worry about being embarassed by the 599 next to me in the parking lot

Porsche 968 Drive

The Porsche 968 steering and suspension is accurate at low speeds, sharp without being dodgy as the pace increases and consistent in response, but a bit short of genuine feedback. That's a downfall, because the chassis is well balanced. Whether you're driving alone or using all the load space for people and luggage, it handles it well with lumpy surfaces. The ride does not deteriorate from being too firm at low speeds, while control at a faster speed is unmatched for a car in its class.

Porsche 968 Safety

Every Porsche 968 model has anti-lock brakes and many airbags, while the expensive and faster models gain stability control. The new face-lift introduced the extras to prevent the car from bad handling, and cruise control. The Porsche 968 has deadlocks and an alarm as standard.

Porsche offers a wide range of safe and reliable motorcars for the intended market of customers. There are quality Porsche 968 parts and used Porsche 968 parts for all Porsche 968 Models. Porsche places a larger emphasis of the manufacturing of these cars due to the popular choice for certain customers to buy used Porsche 968 products and cars.

Porsche 968 Performance Stats

Torque 369 lb-ft at 3,000 rpm

Power 227 kW at 6,600 rpm

I also thought those numbers are indeed for the 968 turbo ( although even that one would not produce 369 ft/lbs of torque, would it ? maybe in the powerhaus turbo ) but someone took the liberty to overlook that small detail and represent the figures as the NA 968's attributes.. But hey, it'd be great if tons of people had access to the site where these figures were posted and there would be a mad rush demand for 968s out there, driving our car values trough the roof

The good regard from our brethren of the VW persuasion isn't/wasn't temporary. I was trying to disprove an assertion somebody made to me over dinner that the 6 spd manual in the 968 was a G50 unit, and came across this thread on VWvortex from July of this year:

Help me decide: Porsche 968 or 986

The results were ~70% in favor of the 968 with a lot of discussion about the pros and cons of both models.

As for the assertion I was researching, I did eventually find a thread discussion transmission swaps for 951s that seemed pretty clear that the 968 6 spd is not a G50. I'm rather annoyed though that the "Original Porsche 924/944/968" book by Peter Morgan doesn't have more than about a paragraph about the 6 spd box -- but goes on for half a page about the damned Tip! The manual gets two sentences, and the second one is only five words: "This gearbox was a dream." Well, there is a reasonable paragraph about the Torsen LSD at the end of the section, but still...

SMJ: I'd like the tip

But yep the discribtion in the book from Morgan about the gearbox is limited.

Maybe because the gearbox is good. And they describe you with a few words I suppose.

Yup. Probably words that one shouldn't use in polite company.

Forget VW owners, I found a secret closely held by Audi owners: the letter "R" added to the rear logo of the car increases HP and Torque to unimaginable levels. I know this because having disposed of a couple of pesky Audi S4s

in the past I was confident enough when seeing one coming up very quickly behind me while entering the highway yesterday and decided to floor it just to show off.. soon as he passed me , and while still wondering WTF just happened, I noticed it was an RS4, not an S4. Sonovabitch, 'dem R fast cars ! ( I guess that's what the R denotes )

So never mind the $ 5,000 supercharger, I'm heading to an Audi dealer and buying that $ 6 R self-adhesive letter to place next to the 968 logo

I thought it was a turbocharged 4 Cyl, but when I got home and looked it up...man, was I wrong ! V8 with 420 HP, and even though it's a pig at nearly 4,000 lbs ( looked like barely more than a compact car to me, how in the world can it weight 3960 lbs ?! ) the power to weight ratio is certainly better than our 968s. So I guess the 4 is not the cyl count, but the AWD ?
