Well Hello
#1

Well hello....

Rob here - recently bought a 49K mile 1993 968 Coupe to replace my 1991 964.

The car has been in New Jersey for most of its life and has been clearly garaged from Day 1.

My 964 was a bit of garage queen with only 60K miles when I sold it and I'm determined that the 968 will not suffer the same fate. In fact I've started using it for daily duties.

Other than a fully stamped service history book the 968 came with very little in the way of documentation. Its very clean and a number of MO30 parts have been fitted suggesting an enthusiast former owner.

I'll be using it for local PCA and SCCA AX events.

Bye for now!

Welcome from the West Coast. I would guess that given the cars rather low mileage it is possible that the balance shaft and timing belts have benn changed only on time. If it has been more than three years since they were changed, you should have them changed immediately. The maintenance schedule calls for the belts to be changed every 30,000 miles, but our collective experience tells us that they age out. One of our west coast guys (DS 968) suffered just such a belt failure with the usual results. the engine in a 968 is an interference engine which means that if the timing belt fails you will have pistons colliding with valves.

If the service book has been stamped you should be able to go back to the shop where the work was performed and have them check their records to tell you when this critical maintenance items was last done.

Welcome aboard! The belt advice from Chris is critical in a 968. If you intend to track the car I'd do the belt work immediately, if the belt goes you'll buy the car all over again getting the engine rebuilt. Have fun!
