Was I Rude?
#21

Well, I maybe be guilty of sitting at the light for 1 second as I have the car in neutral and my foot off the brake pedal (if there is no inlcine). So it will take me a second to engage the clutch and shift into first gear. So, if I get a honk for trying to save my clutch so be it. Honk away!

If they are on the phone, just drive around them - they'll likely not even notice.

Just finished up a couple of weeks of driving - Myrtle Beach, then Pocono's for the 4th. Checked out the

Giant's Despair Hill Climb race. Very cool, including a 1989 Lola Indy car once driven by Bobby Rahal.

Anyway.....

If the person is on the phone, they get the full treatment, full rack of brights and fogs, engine rev, and I lean on the horn, all at once. Hang up and drive! This is an attention getter.

For all other situations, I basically wait for the "driver" to come out of the temporary coma and

see that the light is green - can't bring myself to be the typical New Yorker, even though that's

where I was born and raised.

People riding my bumper when I'm in the left lane? If they come up on me, then back off, no problem.

But if I am moving and the car, usually the largest "FUV" imaginable, I roll my window down and give "the Palm", which is the universal symbol for "Back Off!" No patience for those overtaking me on the right either, which is

something I refuse to do myself, and I wish the police would issue tickets for this and tailgating,

which IMHO are much more dangerous than simple speeding.

My 3 cents...

I rarely, if ever, use my horn. To me it's to get people's attention, and that's it. So yeah, basically if someone is clearly not paying attention when the light is green as I see them fiddling around the cabin, a quick beep is all that's needed. If someone cuts me off, I just roll my eyes, back off and keep going on my way. If someone doesn't want to let me in, I just slow down and let them pass, and try the guy behind them. One car length is not worth the stress.

I hear ya. Some states are better at enforcing it then others. I was traveling in VT and noticed on major hwys that people only drive in the right lane(s). For many miles we drove and the only time a car was seen in the left was to pass and then they would go right back into the right lane. My wife got sick of me talking about it but I was so impressed.

i'm not a fan of passing on the right either, but sometimes there is a moron that just won't move over - no matter how fast you are going, if some nut behind you wants to go faster, move over or be prepared to be passed on the right

traffic flow (often an oxymoron) around here is 80-85 - people doing 65 when traffic wants to do 80 need to get out of the left lane, whether it is the speed limit or not

Passing on the right seems to have various causes:

- Somebody too slow in one or more of the left lanes.

- Racing ricers, one picks left, one picks right

- Some subconscious feeling that it isn't really passing, or the driver is less susceptible to speeding tickets if they pass on the right since it is less obvious or noticeable. I am slick if I can make it by on the right!

- I am almost at the exit, and the right lane is clear, and I am going faster than the traffic in the near left lane, and it is too soon to slow down, and not worth the trouble of moving over 2 lanes to the left, and then back 2 lanes to the right to pass a car.

- I am a truck, and I am supposed to stay in the right lanes.

People going too slow in the left lane(s) may be motivated by:

- Afraid to move to the right, can't see well, just a pain to shift over.

- People who feel they are the fast type of people, and shouldn't have to move over, left lanes are for the winners, and I feel I am a winner type of person.

- Catatonic: asleep at the wheel, on cell phone, talking, daydreaming, listening to music, don't check rear view mirror, etc.

- People who feel that if they are going at least the speed limit they have a right to the left lane even if others are going faster (yes, I've heard them say exactly this). Others shouldn't speed, so screw them if they pass on the right.

- There seems to be fewer cars here, it feels safer.

- Trying to get into the HOV lane, or just came out of it.

- I am trying to move to the right, but people keep passing me on the right, and it is hard to get over.

- There is an upcoming left exit.

Another Trek fan eh? Wonder there is a link with this car or maybe an age-bracket thing.

Hate to admit it, but after years of experiencing many different East Coast traffic norms and Police patterns, driving in SoCal is a complete joy to me. You will get nabbed in certain spots where folks ask the cops to slow things down, and in small towns. And I do respect people's safety and right to a reasonably quiet Sunday afternoon. I don't blow lights and I keep a keen eye for bikes, bicycles, Peds, and dogs - there everywhere.

But on the freeway, its a racestrack. You have to be really cooking to get a ticket. Passing left, right, middle - anything goes, and I love it. I'm a very attentive driver, ignore the phone, look several hundred yards up track, keep my exit strategy fresh, and look at least three lanes deep when moving lanes. Most fun I've had since getting here was riding 4th and 5th in line behind Flash on the Paso run. Had to darn-near anticipate his moves, drop a gear and go to stay in line.

Sorry gents, but I may pass you on the right. You'll probably not see me loafing in the fast lane though.
