Whats the time limit before honking your horn when someone is in front of you stopped and the light turns green?

lol - 5 milliseconds

seriously though - i have found that the length of the honk itself is more important - a quick "beep" usually is not an issue, but a long blast is obnoxious

I refer the escalating method - a tiny "beep", followed by a "blast", followed by a "TAKE THIS!!!" ram in the rear. If you're really quick, you can get all of this in before the driver in front has a chance to react and get out of your way.

Driving in to work behind a bad driver. Perhaps I’m a bit too critical and judgmental of these things but the first sign was the lines this driver was taking, just couldn’t keep the car centered, often crossing into the shoulder. Then he started braking for no apparent reason. Not hard but enough for me to unnecessarily bleed of speed and waste gas. I start looking for opportunities to pass him but traffic was too heavy on this one lane 2 way street (or is that 2 lane 2 way? one lane in ea direction).

Here’s where an altercation began. We approach a light and upon it turning green, he was still on his brakes. I waited about 2.5 seconds then gave 2 quick honks. To which I received a finger and some choice words that I couldn’t make out, before he got off the brake.

Why cant idiots just say sorry and move on. We get our license too easy in the US.

Just needed to vent

The correct answer is; "A New York Minute"

For me the grace period is two seconds . Heck, I give myself at least an extra one after the light turns green just to avoid being t-boned by the red light runners ( and there are A LOT of those a-holes around here ). And I don't mean orange-just-turned-red runners, I mean red for a second or more ones..

So if the driver in front of me is still asleep at the wheel two seconds after the light turns, a quick beep generally suffices. A long blast of the horn may solicit a return long blast from that driver's 9mm, or .44, or whatever.. sad state of affairs we have in that respect, but crazy is the new normal so even an extra five or more seconds of my time & patience ( just taking a deep breath will help ) is a more attractive prospect than the risk... as small as it may be...

A "courtesy" situation I ran into over this past weekend. I was on the NYS Thruway (65mph limit) in the left lane, doing about 75, passing cars in the middle lane. A motorcycle came racing up behind me, got on my bumper, and started flashing his high beam. I wasn't willing to go faster, and he was stubborn and impatient. So, I turned on my flashers; he immediately dashed to the right lane, zoomed past the cars I was passing, and came back to the left lane with his finger in the air to me. Very classy.

one of those situations where you should open your car door just as he's passing you..

For people born and raised in the South - a few minutes, unless the driver is clearly asleep in which case 30 seconds or one full light cycle is acceptable.

For people born and raised in crowded, Yankee ZIP codes and now living in the South - 1 nanosecond.

In Chicago they might give you a toot if they think the light is about to change and you don't look ready. Here in CO they give you a couple of ticks to put your soy latte down before honking.

Here is a set of rules I go by:

1) If it someone who looks shady then I just bare with it. No sense in losing my life cause I couldn't get to work 1 minute faster.

2) If it someone who is just being a Sunday driver, I just give a kind quick beep and off we go.

3) If they have cut me off and slowed down in front me or some similar action to piss me off, that type of action warrants me standing on my horn the minute they make a mistake unless they qualify for rule #1.

This is a HUGE pet peeve of mine. I'm running perhaps 10 over the speed limit in the #1 lane, passing slower traffic to my right, and someone rides my tail, apparently expecting that I join the slower traffic just so he/she can speed faster than I am speeding. My solution is to gradually slow down, pehaps 1 MPH every 10 seconds. It often takes the a-hole a while to figure out that I am doing it on purpose to annoy him. Fun on the freeway.

Cant agree with that one. Actually thats my pet peeve! If I'm going faster then you in the passing lane move over so I dont have to break my speed or pass on your right. It could also be an emergency an there you are stopping some pregnant lady from getting to the hospital!

I know sometimes the driver will slow after passing you. Then he's the jerk. But when someone see's me barreling down on them at a faster rate and they signal and let me pass I always think good driver and give a quick wave.

Well seeing how my first two rust buckets didn't have horns I just sit there.

I only used my horn when either someone was going to merge into me or to get the attention of other Porsche's on the road.

Well, it is hot and sweaty here, there are lots of old trucks up on blocks behind beat up trailers, and people talk funny... Yup! Its the South!

And you can tell the yankees in traffic from their horn honking.

On the serious side, NC lost more dead in the Civil War than any other southern state (The conflict that my brother-in-law refers to as "The war when the North invaded America"). It is definitely and proudly the South. After 15 years of living here, this California boy understands why - and even little things like not honking the car horn help to explain it.
