Wants vs needs
#1

With the economy being as bad as it is, I'm surprised at the amount of people buying into the Black Friday Hoopla. A recent report stated that consumer sales are up 15% but the unemployment rate was unchanged at 9.6 percent.

I got caught in the craze myself,. I got a new HID kit for my 3. got another jacket, Got 2 more watches and yesterday was ready to pull the trigger on a 1TB HD, because the price was so low. Thing is I don't need it (Just like I didn’t need the other stuff). My current back up drive isn't even half full and its holding all my stuff, including movies. I own too many jackets, my stock head lamps work just fine and the last thing I NEED is another watch. What ever happen to being content? I'm going to start asking myself the need vs want question on all my purchases form here on out. Well, I'm gonna try.

That's all I got, stepping off the soap box now.

it's called advertising in media - have you watched a show or movie lately and counted the number of product placements?

Maybe we are bad sports or or bad consumers, but we tend to buy what we need throughout the year and don't put emphasis on holiday shopping. We determine what we want/need, set aside a budget and do our research. We tend to buy Air conditioners in February and Snow Shovels in June.

Of course, we enjoy our friends during the holidays and never miss an opportunity to gift a good bottle of wine or a favorite book.

JMHO,

Your right! My son and I point it out all the time now while watching TV. its gotten worse. Funny thing, I was watching close encounters a few days ago and I'm convinced it was almost fully funded by Budweiser. There were close ups of beer cans every 10 minutes and they ran the full Clydesdale commercial during the movie.

For some. I try an give all year round to friends and loved ones. I never was big on doing it once a year or on a articular day. Seems forced.

One report I heard stated that something like 37% of sales on Black Friday are people buying things for themselves. They may want to purchase something they need in November, clothes for example, or some item they desire, and then wait until this day to try and capture some low prices.

Had to, unfortunately, hit Walmart last weekend. Saw a LOT of people coming out with flat screen TVs in their carts.

Since I've done ( actually over-done) my share of conspicous consumption in years past it now seems I reached a point where I neither need, nor really wish for anything of the " material goods" genre so seasonal discounts have little meaning to me.. and I refuse to wait in long lines for anything..so I guess no new gadgets for me

+1 ds.

If I need something, like a headlight relay, or a new pair of shoes or whatever, I just buy it. The gifts that I remember (and still have) are the things that my kids made for me. Coffee cups - stuff like that. This year I got an extra ash tray and I am going to give it to Mike so that he can hack it up, put some leather on it, and give it back to me. When I croak he gets it back - along with the rest of the car but for this year we both win on Christmas, and I don't end up with another book I won't read or a CD that I never listen to.

LOL - see that, Freakin TVs get us men all the time. The 55" 3D Samsung was on sale for less then $1500. Very tempting. I had to stop and think, there are other needs for that cash and another TV is no more needed then the 3D feature.

Truthfully, the main thing stopping me from pulling the trigger on the TV is that It's about 1/3 the cost of the SC kit. I may not need that either but I'm not ascetic
