Waiting for the tow truck

Won't start. Has electricity, just no spark at all. Ignition switch?



No choice but to tow from work to my shop. Luckily it is close by the office.

My bet is on the DME relay. It has left me stranded twice. Never by my 968 though. Once in my former 911 and once in my current 944. I carry a spare in the glovebox now. Let us know what it turns out to be. Good luck!

The DME is my most likely candidate too, I carry a spare and have used it only once but it sure was handy in that hot parking lot. good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Bob did you end up throwing the original relay away? Or was it an intermittent thing?

Yes, I threw it away and bought a new "spare DME Relay" the next day (they aren't very expensive and electrical problems bug me). Good luck, Bob Blackwell.

I'm actually taking the DME relay out of the fusebox when I park overnight on the street. Just in case.

Sorry all you 968 Sherlock Holmes' - New DME relay installed 2 weeks ago. I am not discounting the possibility the new one is bad but it seems unlikely. I had a similar problem briefly a month or so ago but it did not return, until this morning. My wrench thinks it is my relatively new battery. It is an Advanced Auto special that my daughter's boyfriend who worked there and brought it to me when the old one died late one night last fall. I replaced the starter after that adventure just to be sure. Rats.



Installing another battery to test for a few days/weeks and checking all of the wiring for breaks and corrosion. I may install a new ignition switch for good measure as the hot summer days are coming and this is my daily.

Well it should be very easy to troubleshoot the battery, just turn the lights on and turn the engine over while someone watches the headlights. If the lights go out or are very dim while the engine is turning over then your battery needs a charge or replacement, good luck, Bob Blackwell.

Ahh Man, what a drag. I know what it feels like. I had my car do the same thing, plenty o'juice but no start, eventually tracked it down to a faulty coil. Rat's. I missed a good PCA event because of it.

Was out of town over the weekend and picked it up this eveing. Of course once at the shop it started fine. Predictable.



Shop inspected and cleaned all wires, grounds, and connections. Swapped out a new battery as a test. Seems to be running fine.



I hope I don't have an electrical gremlin to chase for a while...

I had some corrosion at the starter cable that caused my car to be unable to start (with the starter - it started fine by rolling downhill and popping the clutch) for the weekend. Removing the cables, cleaning the terminal and cable ends, etc., fixed the problem. Hopefully, your and mine are fixed for good.

can someone describe the symptoms of a bad dme relay?

i just bought and installed a new one last fall, for peace of mind. it was the 993 version.



this past week, my car has just flat out died twice. once was on the expressway and fortunately, it roll started itself after a second. the second time was right in the middle of a left hand turn. could have been a disaster. while i was sitting dead, the starter turned over strong, but wouldn't start the car. a minute later, vroom and all was well again.



the car is running great. i'm just a tad paranoid now.

i did the blink test and got the all clear signal.



i switched my dme relay back to the original 944 version and all is well.... for now.



my only other thought was the ignition switch.



any ideas?

One thing that 'pops' up now and then is to CLEAN THE GROUNDS...

These cars have several grounds that should be taken off cleaned, put back on, (with a bit of sealer doesn't hurt) If I recall there are six or maybe seven points. They are reaching an age for most that this should be done as corrosion can cause grounding problems. Just a thought....

Yup - big difference cleaning and checking all of the wires and grounds.



No trouble after a week of driving.



I have in the past 6 months replaced the DME relay, the battery, and the starter.

Brian - When my DME Relay failed, I was running in at the track toward the end of the day. Mid-session, I'm down on power a couple of times during a lap, kinda like not-enough-fuel. Continues, so I pull into the paddock, car dies. Start again, runs rough and kinda like starving for fuel, dies again.



I continue this little game long enough to get it parked in my spot. After consulting some folks that are smarter than me, we locate a DME relay (original, believe it or not) from an '86 944 Turbo that blew up that day.



Pop it in, drove home, no problems.



Needless to say, I ordered 3 upon getting home. 1 new one for me, 1 new spare for my glovebox, 1 new one for the owner from which I borrowed the '86 unit, and returned his original as his new "limp home" spare.



Most often, I've heard of them failing with little or no symptoms, so my experience may be unique.

brian - my experience was very much like yours - a half mile from picking my car up from the PO, i came to a stop and it died - engine turne, but nothing - then, i waited a minute, and VROOM - 6 hours later, 80mph, died, coasted to stop - turned key - VROOOM - 8 hours later, same thing, this time i coasted down, turned key off, turned back on and popped the clutch, VROOM - did this the whole way home from cleveland



changed the relay - never happened again

Mike, the part number is:993-615-227-00. As far as I know it is a Dealer Only part, but give NAPA a call, they may stock it. Sunset Porsche in Oregon probably has the lowest price from a Porsche Dealership (www.porscheparts@sunsetimports.com) Good luck, Bob Blackwell.
