Never say never. Take a look at the last photo of this 94 968 cab for sale on eBay...

You'll notice the VIN in the photo does not match the one listed in the ad. Well the one in the ad is correct. What you are looking at in the photo is a stamped VIN error, from the factory!!! It says WP0CA6962RS840458. It should be WP0CA2966RS840458. Can you believe they would make that error?!!! I've seen this stuff on old american muscle cars but never a $60K german sports car.

Yea.... And I can't believe someone caught the error! I'd bet the car's been circulating in the DMV system with the wrong VIN.



That 6th digit is just the airbag code -- I wonder if the car secretly has side impact airbags.... <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/dry.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

If you plug the incorrect VIN that is stamped on the windshield post into Carfax it comes back as an invalid VIN. If you plug in the correct VIN it does come back saying it is a good VIN with a number of records associated with it. So, the title and everything else are probably okay. The DMV guys usually just take a quick look and verify the last few digits. That is probably how it has manged to get by all these years. It is still crazy.

I pitty owner who tries to sort this out with his/her DMV. From my past experiences in Arizona I would expect that it would take an act of God to correct the title.

Tom,

I think the title is fine and will match the VIN on the driver's door jam sticker and the VIN found in the engine compartment. The only one it won't match is the one in the windshield VIN.

if i wanted a cab i would want that car just because of the vin. like the stamp with the upside down airplane. the only one like it - until someone proves there is another.
