Update on engine rebuild
#1

I've been reluctant to give an update on my engine rebuild because things went from bad to worse. First the place that was to do the sleeving went out of business. Then I found out he never order the sleeves from Darton. Fortunately I paid with a credit card so I should be able to get my money back. Now Ivan and I have gone to plan B, that is to send the block to Massachusetts for the sleeving. I have defnetly decided to go with the turbo. Ivan has most of the parts already in stock. Going with lower compression pistons and Motec ECU. Hopefully the block will be back before Christmas and optimistically done by the end of January. We will probably put it on the engine dyno to see what HP we get and to test all the components. Stay tuned.

There's Abacas Racing in Norfolk who did my head and said they could sleeve my block if I needed it- they're a little closer to you...

Also LMN Motorsports in Virginia Beach, but I don't think he can do his own machine work.

given that you are going higher boost, due to the lower compression pistons (an assumption), and given the conversation i had with darton about the question of viability of sleeves in an open deck design, particularly at higher boost, it will be interesting to see how it runs. i was all set to go that route, especially since they are practically in my back yard, but they were not confident that it would work. lol - perhaps it was because they were in my back yard, they were going to do the work, and they didn't want me bugging them when it failed.

Trust in Ivan, he has built some monsters...it would be worth a drive to VA when this is complete just to see how it all turns out.

it's not ivan that is the potential issue. it's sleeve design, and how much the open deck block design poses as a problem under boost. like i said, even the manufacturer of the sleeves said they wouldn't do it, because they were concerned it would fail. so far, as far as i know, only lear has tried to use these sleeves under boost, and it's much lower boost. there also is not yet a lot of time on them to see if they end up moving around.

it will be interesting indeed, because this could solve a lot of problems with pistons and sleeves and open up a lot more options for sizes and compression ratios. i'm hopeful that it works.

According to Ivan the sleeves will be dry fitted as opposed to wet fitted. Wet fitting allows for the sleeves to easily changed if there is a problem, dry sleeving is tougher. He also has done turbos with sleeving, so I'm confident it will work. I also will need a bigger fuel pump and  fuel injectors. The block is on it's way to Mass. Ivan is very picky about who does the work and only goes with someone who has proven to do the job correctly.
