Tricky speedometers

Whose brilliant idea was to configure the speedometer of a car this way ?! Just picked up this rental Ford SUV and crusing along , looking at the speedometer needle which points at around 60 mph ( on any other normal friggin car ! ) only to realize when I look at the positioning of the numbers that I'm actually pushing over 90 mph ! Lol. Ugh.

We rented a Ford SUV a few weeks back, and the steering wheel was something out of a formula car. Buttons, dials, switches, and every manner of control. Distracting, confusing, and completely unnecessary IMHO.

Lol flash, if you look at the numbers themselves yes of course it's at 70 , but what I'm talking about is that in 99% of tne speedometers in 99% of vehicles, tne 110 mph marker is not at the 12 o'clock position as is the case in this car, and the 140 mph is way down and around the circle , so when you see the needle hovering around 9:30 as is the case here you're typically going only about 40 mph.. :-)

nope - 70 ALWAYS corresponds with 112. that's just the math. can't avoid it. every speedometer that only has one needle is the same (i don't know of any that don't, but i thought i would make room for that possibility). go take another look. they will all be the same alignment.



maybe the clocking position of the gauge bugs you, but to me, it's no different than in a race car, where you set the gauge orientation so the needle points UP in its nominal position. that way, you don't have to actually read the gauge, but rather only know if the needle is not pointing up

Huh ? Ok, looking straight at the speedometer the 12 o'clock ( north, lol ) is 110 mph . 140 mph is around 2 pm. Except for a Ferrari Enzo or a Veyron I can't think what car has 140 mph just barely past the top center mark..the speedometer,s right hand lowest point in that case would be at least 260 mph wouldn't it ?

yeah - for you, it's all about the clocking. i get that. i don't personally care how the gauge is rotated. i look at the numbers. every car i have every had has been different. that speedo only goes to 140, and they chose to put the gear indicator on the right, so everything is pushed to the left. had they have rotated it so the gear indicator is at the bottom, like most cars, then straight up would have been 70.



by the way, the position is not all that far off of what we have for the 968. in the 968, 92 is straight up.
