trans I.D. numbers
#1

I have doe a search and also read most topics under T&D, and cannot find anything reguarding where the tranny serial#/code is located. Can anyone help me out on this? I could jack the car up and look around, but it would be easier if I had an idea of where to start. Also, does the serial# tell if the trans is a LSD?

Option code in the trunk, under the carpet near the spare tire, or your owner's manual will give you that information. Code is 220 or 221.

Yeah,I know about the option code location, but the p.o. had a LSD installed(hopefully) and I would like to know if serial# indicated this.

How about the "My Cousin Vinny" approach? On a slightly wet surface (just being conservative here, don't flame me) have someone stand behind the car...you punch the accelerator and of both wheels spin then you have it, if they don't, you don't...

Actually, all I am trying to find out is where the transaxle serial# is located on the trans itself.

Found out that the serial # is possibly on the top of the trans case, right front. Have not been able to verify that yet. Saw a 5-spd trans, and that was where it's ser.# is located.

Correct, the trans code is on top by the bell housing.
You may need a small mirror and flash light to see it.

It's also possible that just the diff was changed, so the trans code would
not help in the case.

Do as Jay suggests and do the Cousin Vinny trick with a couple
of yuts...

I think the correct spelling would be "Yutes"

thanks. The diff was changed. I was trying to find out all the info I could. I knew that on my '87 951, the trans code shows exactly what type and how it is configured, for example, limited slip, with oil cooler. I just was not sure where this code was located, because the 951's tranny code was written on one of the service records.
