Umm, so you've worn them before?? There are certain things you just don't disclose to a bunch of guys on an internet car forum.

(I won't admit to anyone that I bought AND wore a pair of "Hammer" pants back in the late 80's. Photographic evidence exists as well. )

Getting back to the topic (well, sort of, anyway) - I love my 968 and I take it to the track, but I don't think I'd want to buy one for the purpose of turning it into a track car. My experience suggests that I'd have to spend (again) lots of cash and I'd end up with a car unlikely to satisfy my son's pedal requirements. For something like $20k (and, possibly, much less), there appear to be excellent stock Z06s, or fully prepared E36s, and I'm sure lots of other choices. We're not looking to create a project that will take 2 years to get to the track with - more like Madonna, we just wanna have fun.

BTW - I don't know if I mentioned that the F360 has a black leather interior with yellow stitching on the dash, doors, and seats.

And, Jim, I'm due to make a visit to Pete, but I don't know when that will be. I need to have a source of income before I can dump more $$$ into the 968 - although, at the least, I MUST get the AC attended to.

Still drifting around this topic...

My son and I have decided that the track car we purchase shouldn't be too much car, so I'm wondering what folks think of this one. http://www.race-cars.com/carsales/bmw/1228...228100502ss.htm

Honestly, we've been sobered by Gary's recent incident, and this Bimmer looks like it's got some pretty serious roll protection. However, we're novices (particularly with BMWs), so any and all opinions and views are invited.

if you have concerns about satisfying pedal requirements, then i would focus on lighter weight cars - the hp to weight ratio makes a lot less of a difference - 140hp in a 1900 lb car feels a lot faster than 220 hp in a 2600 lb car - the problem then becomes the instructor though - that will make the smaller car feel really heavy

the E36 is not a bad car - lots of guys drive them for similar reasons as you - but i think you will quickly tire of it and look for something that feel less like a sedan and more like a sportscar

i'm starting to think a 951 might make you happiest - it would have the handling you want, known commodities of a car you love, and could easily have the power your son is looking for - it would take very little to end up with a 350hp 2300 lb car - cost would be minimal too

If I had to start over, I would do the following:
944 (maybe S), fully stripped, serious custom cage, seat (do not overlook importance), and then put all the suspension goodies, etc. back in.

A race car is fast. Period. I would be more concerned about the safety of the car than anything else.
944 parts are cheap and abundant.

It's not a great DE car since there are just so many high HP cars out there now.
But it can be a fantastic race car and race in multiple series.

Between 944Cup and PCA there is tons of good racing for 944 based cars.

A 968 is a great track car, but heavy. I think the lighter weight 944 (even down on power) would be a lot of fun.

Well, the next track event for me and my son is a week from Friday with NASA at Pocono. We've never run with this organization, and have never been at this track. I don't remember if I posted this, but my son picked up a 1997 Miata - HEAVILY modified by lots of stuff from Flyin' Miata. We're still going through the documents, but the easiest thing to say is that it's supercharged and has a serious track-oriented suspension. Right now, the car is at The Dealer Alternative, a shop in W. Orange NJ that was recommended by Flyin' Miata. It's getting a once-over and a tech inspection. This weekend we'll load the trailer, and then head out on Thursday evening. Stay tuned.

Excellent, Clem. We won't get there Thursday until a bit on the late side - I have meetings in southern Virginia on Thursday, so that's we we'll start loading over the weekend. I have to leave after Friday, my son will stay for Saturday as well. You'll be able to spot us pretty easily - black F350 dually crewcab with a 45' black trailer doesn't hide very easily! Please come by. This is our first event with any organizer other than Chin.

Clem, I don't know if you're still watching this thread, but I am not making it to Pocono. Some dumb business stuff came up and I have to meet tomorrow afternoon with one of the owners of VIR. So, I'm stuck in VA. My son, though, has driven the rig to Pocono, but my car likely will stay inside. Look for him, though - black Miata with two large white racing stripes.
