Sorry for such a basic question....I searched the forums and couldn't find an answer. May I tow (without destroying) my 6-speed backwards with the rear wheels in a tow dolly?

as long as the angle isn't too steep as to make the front end scrape the ground (very questionable), and that you can actually get the dolly under there (also questionable), i don't see anything preventing it in theory

i've never seen or heard of it being done though

Thanks, Flash. Another question I hoped to get some feedback on was whether or not the steering lock would be sufficient to keep the wheels pointed straight down the road. Maybe I'll experiment....carefully.

I have actually towed mine in a dolly with the rear on the ground, just put it in neutral. Theses cars do not have trans coolers on the manual so there is no issue there. Now if the driveline was questionable, trans, clutch, axles, etc, then I would go with a full trailer. I generally use a full trailer for everything, but I picked up the car and planned to just rent a trailer to bring it home, but they only had dollies left.

If have an automatic, do not tow the car with rear wheels on the ground.
The trans fluid will burn up.

I'd get a full trailer - if the dolly doesn't work out you'll be really pissed at yourself.

I believe the driveline to be tight. How far and how fast did you tow your 968? I'm considering a dolly as a regular means of towing my 968 behind my Winnebago. I'd prefer four-wheels-up, but those darned carhaulers are so heavy that the combination exceeds the towing capacity of my rig. Flash was right about the clearance up front, though. I believe the front cowling would clear level pavement, but any deviation (like maybe a dead cat in the center of my lane) would definitely get ugly (and uglier for the cat).

dollies are for short tows only, and should be considered on an emergency basis only

speeds are NOT to exceed 45mph - VERY bad things happen when you do

get a trailer - take a look at a Featherlite

towing is not to be taken lightly - it can be extremely dangerous - i am writing a story about towing right now (finishing a long procrastinated one actually) - i've tried just about everything over the years

as a reference, regardless of what the "max tow weight" is, your winnebago will need a minimum towing capacity 1.25 times the gross weight of your car/trailer combination - if it isn't at least that, it won't be safe - i realize that people exceed this all the time, and have done so with out incident - so have i - however, i have also gotten into some very scary emergency situations where i was extremely lucky not to have flipped and wrecked the whole mess

OK but what is the safe way to get the 968's up on the flat bead tow truck. Are there connections under the front or in the rear for those drivers to hook onto? If so where are they? Pictures would be nice for us that do not have lifts in our garages.

Well I found the point to attach the tow hook that was to be in my tool kit, unfortunately it is not in the car. It turns out to be a threaded rod that has a eyelet in the front of it. One screws this eyelet into the hole which is located just above a front license plate, and you use this to pull the car up onto a flat belt. The manual says not to use it to hold the car on the flat bed, as damage might accrue.

I just called Pelican Parts and the part number is 92872210105 cost $58.25 + $10 shipping takes a week to get from the factory.
