Total Cost of My Purchase in June 2006



1994 968

80,000 miles, CA car.

6 speed coupe. Cloth seats.

Body in nice condition (B+). Hood repainted. Original glass.

Brand new brakes and cam belt.

Few records, so complete PPI done ($200).





$11,000 Purchase price (Negotiated hard due to known issues.

There were 2 coupes for sale in So Cal at the time.)

$ 1,400 Diagnose slow leaks, repair wheel bearings, replace bushings,

flush brake/clutch, fix power window switch, et al.

(All known issues from PPI.)

$13,400 Feeling pretty good about my purchase at this point (1 month into it).





and then…



$ 200 Fix trip odometer (broke after I bought it).

$ 1,500 New clutch (new fluid again) and resurface flywheel.

(Clutch went out during first lap of 3rd autocross.)

$ 1,300 Replace broken balance shaft belt, replace cam belt and

all belt rollers, reseal balance shaft housing.

(Belt snapped during street driving.)

$15,400 Total after first 1,000 miles driven. (2 races)





Now, since this is my track car, I’ve also added new wheels, tires, sway bars/delrin bushings, race alignment and corner balance, harness bar, etc.

So add another $3,500 to the $15,400 for my total cost of $18,900.

David - This is a really nice explanation of "what to expect" in my experience. I'm sure some folks will buy a used Porsche and just drive it, but I haven't really met any of those folks.



I've acquired two P-cars now and both followed a pretty similar path to yours. Looks great, may need a thing or two, actually ends up needing a thing or three, then spits out a new repair at you once or twice.



I used to say that everything on this car is $1000. Looks like I should say it's more like $1500 a pop! <img src="/forum/images/smilies/968/wink.gif" class="smilie" alt="" />

My white 968 needed nothing for the first three years and then it was time for belts and other than fluid changes that is all that it has needed. The blue one-water pump, clutch, flywheel and pressure plate in the first couple of months.

But do you track your car?



Im in for a gearbox repair now and I've only owned mine for a month. I would like to take care of all the little things that I hear are common areas but the cost associated with them is too much for me to handle all at once.

I think this is a great thread to have out there. It goes along with my purchase where I had to do the clutch right after the first couple of weeks of ownership. I think with any of these cars that you are looking at, if it is in "good" or "bad" shape, plan on at least $1.5K to $3K in repairs right afterwards (sometimes in parts alone) and you will have a better idea of what you are getting into.

Not sure exactly how long after a purchase is still considered "new" but I bought my white coupe in Sept 2004 for $25,000 (Canadian) and have now just passed $32,000 in repairs. It would be easier to list what is still "original" from before I bought it.



My blue coupe, since April 2006, has cost me about $75 (a required motor vehicle inspection, glove box hinges and repair kit for the centre console). The last two were broken when I bought the car.



The difference was one had 140,000 hard kilometers on it when I bought it and probably had been abused and one had 35,000 tender kilometers from a fanatical owner.

I spent about $4k in parts bringing my 968 up to excellent plus shape. Replaced much of the high wear or electrical and fuel delivery stuff whether it needed it or not just to have peace of mind on cross country trips. Stuff I took off will become working spares.
