top transmission replacement quote
#1

Folks,

My top is in manual mode right now and I recently confirmed that the top transmissions need to be replaced. There is a local top place that quoted $450 for just labor and I was surprised at how much the labor costs given how easily the transmissions can be installed.

When I talked to the owner, he said the parts are not plug and play because of the synchromization of the motors, etc. I knew it was a pain to get everything aligned and I found posts with folks saying just take it to the dealership to have them do the alignment, but is 4 hours of time really necessary (after putting the transmissions in) in order to get everything synched up?

Also, just to confirm, there is nothing with the motors that plays into this, right? everything that gets adjusted has to do with the top frame, microswitches, etc, right? All the motors do is turn one way or the other depending on whether you hit the switch up or down?

thanks in advance,

Ken

If I were you I'd just leave it in manual mode, it's much less risky that way. You really don't want to replace a snapped main bow -- they run $1000 each for the part alone.

replacing the motors is indeed a pain in the butt. you have to remove the rear cover, which invariably snaps the plastic clips.

then, once you have them in, you have to set and run the cables, which then need to be adjusted to be synchronized. not a difficult task, but tedious and time consuming.

then you get to finally deal with the header bar and such.

if you get it wrong, you will snap a bow. that will set you back a grand, plus the top it ruined when it snapped.

if you are stuck on having a power top, i would definitely leave this to the shop, and make them liable for it when it goes bad.
