Top Forgotten Porsches
#1

Let me preface this by saying that I limited my list to what I figured were mainstream production models. I left out limited production cars (i.e abarth 356, Glaser (sp?) 356's, Kharmann bodied cars, etc.) I'm sure you have your own opinions and I am interested in seeing how you expand/contract/modify your own lists. With that said here we go.

1. 912 - Although it has the look of the well recognized early 911, not many people understand or remember that there was ever a 4-cylinder "911"

2. 914/914-6 - I've seen it happen more than once at an auto show. Somebody walks by one of these and has to ask what it is and who made it. Looks nothing like any other Porsche in my opinion.

3. 968 - You had to know ours would be on here. How many times have you been asked what it is or if it is a 944? Only us select few remember and cherish the 968.

4. 924 - Same reason as above. 944's are way to common and cheap and the 924's similar styling causes it to often be grouped under the "it's a 944" umbrella.

5. 928 - Were it not for Tom Cruise and Risky Business this Porsche would go relatively unremembered. Although it had the longest production run of any of the other models, it is still uncommon to see them and many commoners don't recognize them.

So there it is. My opinion. Take it for what it's worth and feel free to do what you want with it.

The 90x series of cars are good ones. I thought of them when I came up with my list, but left them out because I felt they were more race car than production street car. Still great cars and largely forgotten.

Very interesting post Spectre. Here is my list:

1. 968 - who can beat the subtle 959 lines and round headlights that pop forward?

2. 928GTS - the ultimate grand touring vehicle with a great V8 snarl.

3. 924S - the late 80s answer to "affordable," just wish they put the 944/968 dash in it.

4. 951 - many available mods, perfect balance, and great fenders.

5. 930 - wasn't this EVERYONE'S favorite car in the late 70s?

Perhaps the most ultimate forgotten Porsche is the 924 Carrera GT. There are a handful around and yes they are a limited run vehicle but that much horsepower with such little weight. WOW!

911 World calls the 968 one of the rarest..

Also add on the 916, which is a fixed roof 914 powered by a 911S motor, from 71 and 72. They were prototypes but 11 were made and some are still around today.

The 914/8 which is also a prototype, but two were built and still exist. They are powered by a 3 liter air cooled flat eight out of the 908/3 race car.

Nice article bandit! I may have to order that if they still have any left. Flash, I have to admit that even for a porschephile like myself, I hadn't heard the inernal designation of 924 turbo before. I had to look them up. It is interesting that they had different model designations for the right (932) and left (931) hand drive versions.

Same is true of the 944 turbo

951 left hand

Once again, I knew the 951 designation for the 944 turbo but I'd never heard the 952 designation for the right hand drive version. Does Porsche continue this tradition today with other LH/RH drive models? Why did they do this?

Why hasn't the 959 appeared on this list? It was a semi limited model but they are everywhere in Europe.

Then there was my personal favorite the GT1. But that is definatly limited.

Here are some pics of a GT I came across awhile back. If this car was another color other than red, I would really like it.

But it is a really neat car for what it is and when it was designed.

A few thoughts:

1. Hard to consider the 959 as 'forgotten.' It is one of the most iconic designs the company ever created. 959s are mobbed at car shows and events like Rennsport Reunion. Everyone who knows anything about Porsche knows what a 959 is.

2. The 931/932 are forgotten not just because there were not many of them, they are forgotten because they are nightmares to repair. One of the worst Porsches of all time. I know of at least 3 just in the Raleigh, NC area discarded in the past few years because of the cost to repair and the unavailability of some critical engine parts.

3. If the 924S had the 944 dash I would own one.

4. There are few things more fun to drive than a well-sorted 914. Pure sports car.

5. The 928 is not forgotten in my neck of the woods. At a Saturday morning coffee get together earlier this month we had no less than 9 in attendance!

6. Flachbau, Flachbau, Flachbau!

I wonder if those air intake/driving lights are available for a test fix on a 968...anyone know what the part number might be?

AIR makes them for the 993, but do not fit "right" but will fit.

IMHO, if you are handy with FG they can be modified to fit "right"

I thought the 924 GT had the first 16 valve four banger. It was a 924 of some kind was it not?
