too much ventilation
#1

did a search, came up with nothing.. which is a bit surprising because I could have sworn this topic was covered here at some point..

anyway,

way too much air blowing in the cabin with the switch set at 0. in fact, there's almost no difference b/w that and the 1 setting.. furthermore, the differences

between 1, 2, etc. are very small and only the last setting seems to make a significant difference. My cabin filters are very clean, so no clogging there which might impede function.

So, shouldn't the 0 setting be the "OFF" position ? ...or at maybe just a very faint

air release?

What could this be - resistors gone bad, blower fan itself, the switch is screwed up ?

actually, it's always been like this, so I'm definitely getting older because things which I ignored for many years are just starting to bug me

btw, the A/C switch works perfectly well.

dan - i'm confused - are you not getting blown enough, or too much, or just at the wrong time?

lol - seriously - 0 being low flow seems to be a german thing - bmw does it too - there should be a pretty good difference though between 0 and 1 (no binary jokes please)

something does sound amiss

maybe that's why the germans don't make computers? - they don't know what zero is

I'm going to guess that it's a resistor-related problem. There should be a very noticeable difference in each step of the blower switch. I'll pay more attention when I'm driving in the morning, but I believe that, at 0, the air is only "moving" if the car is moving. At 1, there's air flow but not enough to move your hair. At 2, you can really feel the air flow, and at 4 you really hear it, too. (You can guess what happens at 3.)

I get that too, the fan doesn't stop when it's at 0, it just spins at a much reduced rate. However, when the slider for the top vents is set to minimum, it doesn't affect how much air comes out of the centre vents. And I can hear the motor working as I move the slider back and forth. I have to use the windshield slider thingy to stop any air from coming out (by redirecting it to blow on the windshield instead).

btw, sure I could just close the vents, but that's not the point.. must fix this

( unless it's a normal thing for the 968 ...and bmws. not MBZ though, so not ALL german cars )

resistor ? where is that located ? easy to change ?

considering how these cars are designed I' d be surprised if it wasn't a $ 3 item which requires 10 hrs of labor to replace, or it's an integral part of a $ 500 switch mechanism requiring you change the entire unit..

ds968...

Amen to that. lol. So true that it hurts!

I have been trying to replace a $15 door part for weeks. It is hidden in an unreachable spot that will probably require that I pull the whole door apart and maybe remove the window.

There is hope in sight as I can see it through a ventilation hole with a mirror!

I only wish that I had telekinesis!

when i first got my car, i noticed that the fan motor ran so long as the key was turned on. seems ridiculous to me. i took it in to the dealer and they told me that the car was designed to do this. so even if the fan switch is at 0, the motor runs.

even when i'm driving the car in freezing weather (not often!) i've never had to turn the fan on past 0. i've learned to just angle the vents away from my face and there's no harm. flipping the defroster lever also works.

now the defroster - why the heck can we not run the thing at a slower fan speed? it's all or nothing. sure does clear the air, but if it's really muggy outside, i have to run the a/c to keep the windshield clear. seems like in normal cars, you can hit the defrost and turn the fan to a lower setting. that full blast fan is pretty loud!

one things for sure, our car has huge...... vents!

Brian,

The defrost - same on my Mercedes. Only full blast, and as hot as it gets - no way to adjust. What;s up with Germans and cabin air ?!

As for the 0 setting on the air thing.. if the car is sitting I have to put my hand right up to the vent to feel any air, and that's barely so... but when the car is moving above 20 or 25 mph, that's when I start to feel an air breeze.

Sounds like it's another abnormal but normal thing on these cars

Don't your cars have a recirc button on the dash, left (I think) of the sliders? Small airflow when moving would make sense to me even at "0" as that would be air coming from outside into the cabin and since it would be flowing through the fan it would turn the fan even though the fan would not (?) be on. But if you push the recirc button it should stop the flow of outside air and with the fan switch at "0" the fan would not turn.

Recirc would also be used when you first start the A/C on very hot days but don't leave it on more than a few min. as I believe the evap (?) can frost up? I'm trying to remember from a short auto A/C class I took many years ago.

I think I've only used mine on 0, 1 and 2 so far and it seems to work very well, at least compared to an '88 911 Cab (VERY poor A/C in those).

Edit: The Recirc button on my car is just left of the fan speed rotary switch and above the Defrost button. Activating the recirc button should have the effect you were looking for (no outside air in cabin) and easier than closing all the individual vents. I do this when I'm in traffic stuck behind a smelly truck.

Perhaps I'm missing something, but why not just close the vent...[?] Or are you wondering if your switch is kaput?

I have 2 domestic cars and both flow air at the lowest setting too.

the air re-circ. button did not make a difference.

yeah, like I said before I could just close the vents but I wanted to know if there was a defect in the switch or something else..

sounds like no defect ; just the way it works

me, too. recirc had no effect. the fan just runs all the time.

not really a big deal. sometimes when i'm working on something and have the key on with the car not running, it bugs me b/c i know the battery is getting drained quickly.

It is normal. It is part of the active climate control system so that the temperature dial is always functional in controlling the cabin temp.

And now the other 968 ..same component ( fan blower switch ) but different problem : it works only at the max ( 4th ) setting , and only does so sporadically . Oops , search engine just pulled up a potentially more appropriate thread , I'll post there. Never mind :-) :-)
