Tire/wheel recommendations
#1

I want to go with the best 17" performance set-up I can put on my coupe for around $1K. I have done some research and am headed in the following direction....

Tires: Falken Azenis 615 front and rear. These seem like the best option for price and performance. I don't care about mileage. Is there anything better for the street that's legal?

Rear wheels: OEM Carerra 2 twist wheels for the rear -- 9"x17 ET55 (21.5#). This is the same wheel as the optional 17" cups that came with the 968 only they are several pounds lighter. I have already picked a nice set of these up for $200 -- right on budget. Should be perfect with 255 40s. What about 275s or 245s? Is it worth the more grip or more go (and I don't care about filling up my wheel well)?

Front wheels: Here is where it gets difficult for me. I want to avoid a 45 aspect sidewall as I believe the 40 will provide better performance. With the Falken's this leaves me with the choice of 215, 245 or 255 widths.

The 7" et55 twist wheel will only work with the 215. Overall tire height would not be the same as the rears. Porsche seems to want the same heights on the 968. This is probably not a good choice.

The 245s or 255s will work with either the 8 1/2 or 9" twist wheels. What about the 9" with the 255 x 40s on the front? Added bonus is they could be rotated front to back. The heights would be the same at 25". They should easily fit in the front wells. Has anyone tried this?

Thanks for any feedback you can offer!

the 968 never came with a twist wheel - in 17s they came with the C2Turbo and 993 Cup - what does this Carrera 2 twist wheel look like?

as for fitting a 9" wheel to the front, a 55mm offset could push the tire out beyond the fender, depending on the specific tire and its actual measured width - they vary a lot from brand to brand - i have a 57mm offset on a 9" rim with a 25' diameter tire, and it is REALLY close

i have often thought about going back down to 17s and going 9s all around for the very same reason, but have not made the move yet

as for tires, the yokohama advan neovo is the stickiest thing i can find out there - not the cheapest though - the new hot budget tire seems to be the sumitomo hzr3

lol - when this thread decides if it's tires or wheels, i'm going to move it to that area

The original Carrera 996 wheels (often called Cup 3) is among the lightest you can find so I have done the same and now found someone wanting all 7" wheels I have left over :-). Right now I also have 2 RH cup 3 copies. These have ET 47 and with 3 degrees of camber (last year, this year 3,5 degrees) I could just fit them forward (my car is very low with 620 mm to the arc in the front). If you are running a decent camber the Cup 3s should work.

Tire proposal: Hankock Evo S1, got second place after Pirelli P Zero nero in Sport Autos performance tire test (excluding "R" tires). A fraction of the price.

best
