Pinion bearing questions
#61
look at the photo of how much had come out of my bearing - and that was only one of the bad spots -
Only goes to show that just because someone is an excellent mechanic, it does not make him a metallurgy engineer and expert in tne propensities the part he repairs / replaces :-) As I said, just one opinion, ostensibly somewhat credible given the source, but obviously wrong in light of tne evidence

I don't know if they actually flushed out small chunks, of if they wore away in tiny bits...I was not there to sift the contents...this photo shows how it looked when I got the call to say it was apart and to confirm pinion bearing failure...

Well, there's your problem right there. Somehow a big metal box with a perforated lid got in your transmission.

Of course! Duh! How silly of me!

Well... it must have helped since it doesn't make that awful noise now - lol

I read this thread with interest, and I don't agree with some mechanics opinion that they could last for another 250K miles while screaming. A tapered roller bearing requires a pre-load to prevent skipping of the rollers between the races, when it skips it accelerates and decelerates and causes roller and race damage.

The more revolutions that an anti-friction bearing (ball or roller), the close to end of life it becomes. Once it has defects, it degrades much quicker.

I hope to have a 968 soon (maybe today?) and I hope NOT to have the issue with the pinion bearing, but if I do, I have a friend (and myself) who could take care of it.

Good luck on your purchase, and thanks for the inputs. It sounds like you're rebuilt transmissions before - someone with that background would be a great resource in the 968 world, because of the commonness of the pinion bearling issue with these cars, and I know there are several people who have thought about tearing into their gearboxes, but have hesitated because of the lack of much of a prior knowledge base.

I discovered a cheap fix for whining coming from the back of the car.. just turn round and tell the wife to shut it!

Interesting additional "note" about the sound I'm hearing. As I was driving it to the vanpool pick-up point this morning, the tires kicked up a few small rocks into the wheel well. But the sound they made sounded for all the world like they were pinging off my roll bar! So I think the technician's theory that the roll bar (which is welded to the chassis) is transmitting sounds to the interior in unfamiliar and unpredictable ways may hold some water. The more I listen to the noise, the more it sounds to me like linkage noise.

It's a shame it's not bolted in (the roll bar) cause then you could take it out and compare...I hope this is all it is...

Continued good luck!

Does anybody have a audio file of the pinion bearing sound? I found a link here on the forum, but it did not work.

Take the car up to 80 and let off the throttle...it sounds like a jet taking off...

I am also looking for an audio file of the failed pinion bearing.

Please post a file if you have.
